Elysium! An amazing Neill Blomkamp film that some people loved, others didn't, but since Blomkamp's new movie Demonic just came to theatres, it felt like a good excuse to take a look at this one. So here's everything right with Elysium!

Fun fact about this movie. Eminem was originally asked to play the lead role. The reason why he ended up turning it down, was because the film couldn't be filmed in Detroit. So he asked Matt Damon if he wanted the role instead. Matt was the second choice

I think something that I feel gets overlooked in this film is the fact the ships in Elysium are already stocked with med bays meaning they could of already helped or solved the issues at hand, possibly eluding to Elysium was probably a station designed as a medical institute but probably got monetised when shit hit the fan led to people that had money fleeing to it.

@TheKazragore you said, “I have a right to walk down the street without fear of being killed” - this is childish and false. No one controls your fears but you and the wider society gives no moral weight to fear, nor should it. What makes you perceive fear in a situation gives someone else comfort (namely, having a gun) - so why do your feelings matter more than others? Simply: they don’t. I’m glad you followed that awful statement up with a good point: you do have the right to not be murdered. However, no society can guarantee that right - all we can do is set the norms that influence the likelihood that it won’t happen. The idea that the USA could have a gun-free norm is utopian BS. There are already more boomsticks than people and with 3D printing coming along…yea that ship has sailed. The USA is an experiment whereby the gun IS the norm. Like it or not, it’s a foundational part of the culture. Don’t like it, mayhap leave? And don’t take that the wrong way - car culture and unwalkable cities are also very ingrained in America and are the two primary reasons why my family is looking to raise our kiddo in somewhere NOT the USA. I do side with the gun owning culture in the US. But I will happily trade that to raise my kid in an environment where they can get outside and play from dawn to dusk without me being at risk of child services being called for “neglect.” I guess my point is: you are but a blip in history - culture takes generations to change. Think long and hard whether you want to bear the weight of that cross or devote yourself to other pursuits.

@Ephemis Priest “You can’t just give people more equal incomes and provide robust safety nets and easy access to healthcare for everyone! It scares me, and I don’t like it! So I’m going to point to other countries that are more authoritarian than socialist while ignoring every single horrific government in the world that are all capitalist! See, see? Only ruin! The US’ six decades of trade wars, regime changes and espionage campaigns don’t mean anything because all of those places are big bad for no reason other than themselves because all countries are in a vacuum- unless it’s capitalist, then I will abstract and reach as far as I can for the most meaningless praise. People dont deserve health care or the right to food and water and shelter just because they work. The over 70% of Americans that do not make living wages deserve to starve for not being lucky enough to be born rich enough to go to college” - your argument being paraphrased by me. Imagine arguing that democracy in the workplace and human rights shouldn’t exist because the top 1% need to make more money and everyone else should starve. It’s cute, you fell in love with your own oppressors!

It's always nice seeing people who actually understand that, realistically, governments and companies waste a ton of money avoiding problems than they would've used to actually fix it. Maybe avoiding it once or twice saved them money compared to fixing it immediately, but the problem keeps getting worse and they keep spending so much money to avoid it than it surpassed the cost of just fixing it.

@Jonathon Davonger no, my "tactic" is "I can't be bothered wasting my time correcting you on so many gishgalloped talking points when my own experience tells me that people citing these *specific* ideologies never listen anyway because they've already had it drilled into them that they're a genius savant by all the ancap grifters". And there you go again, talking about "damage wrought by BLM and Antifa" with nary a thought as to what those groups (and spoiler alert, one of them isn't even a top-down organised group) stand for or what caused things to get to "riot" stage. You are just another blinkered rightoid. I can't be bothered. I just can't. If you genuinely gave a fuck about "BLM and Antifa" you'd have learned the real cause of that summer of activity and wouldn't be talking about them in that way, and given that you *are* talking about them that way, nothing I can say is going to un-learn all the bullshit the right-shills have hammered into you. Thus, I cannot be bothered even trying. If you haven't taught yourself why you're wrong, which is trivial to do, then there's zero chance you'll listen to anything I say. Do You See?

4 maanden geleden
Jonathon Davonger
Jonathon Davonger

@johnnypopstar Ah the tactic of attacking the source rather than the argument. You seem to think I'm impressed... and I'm not. You're hyper focusing on one single part, and declaring my entire argument invalid. My point is still the same. I can't come up with an idea that I think will sell, and will it into existence. At some point I'm going to have to sit down with someone who has a lot more money than me and convince them that my idea is worth investing in. And if I don't convince one person, then I just move on to the next, and the next, and the next, and the next until I either give up, or find one that will back my idea. Hell, you see an example of this in Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson went to multiple studios to get the project funded, and almost all of them turned him down, until he got to the one who ultimately would, who not only backed one film, they backed all three sight unseen. If some government office was in charge of that, and the bureaucrat that ran it decided they didn't want the project to exist, that would be the end of it. A perfect example of that was before the rocket program that got us to the Moon. Von Bruan tried to get the US Government to back his hopes of putting a man on the moon, but the government turned him down, only wanting him to make ICBMs. He then went to Disney, put his idea out there for the world to see, and suddenly Congress was getting flooded with "Why aren't we doing this?" letters. A decade or so later, Niel and Buzz were bouncing around on the Moon. That's what it took to get *our* government to back a project, imagine what it's like elsewhere where the government is the *only* say in the matter. Also, just because I watch someone, doesn't mean I wholeheartedly agree with them. As you should have seen when I was talking about medical research, I likened it to how other countries fly the F-16 in their Air Forces, and only have to pay for the plane, parts, and training. That's because we (the US) handled all the R&D costs of the jet. The same holds true with medical tech and research. Much of it is researched and developed here in the US, and we then ship it overseas where other countries only have to buy the product in question (be it a machine or medicine), and learn how to use it correctly, which is far cheaper to do when you're not the one trying to figure out how to make the thing in the first place. And my knowledge of how the medical world works doesn't come from people who talk fast, or from people who just so happened to have a (very risky) operation. It comes from people who've had to watch kids as young as 5 undergo these operations and watch as some of the most skilled hands in the world operated slowly and methodically so a child could beat cancer and maybe live a normal life (My ol'man worked at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, one of the top Children's Hospitals in the world). It also comes from someone who has counted more white and red cells then she can remember (my step mom, a lab tech), and someone who studied cardiac nursing for about a decade before doing it for 25yrs (my mom, a cardiac nurse). I also live in one of those cities where homelessness is practically decriminalized, to the point where just tonight before typing all of this a homeless person asked me on three different occasions if I had money to spare. I work around the corner from where a fellow security officer was gunned down in cold blood, dying enroute to a hospital mere blocks away. I've seen the damage brought by BLM and AntiFa first hand. The stores that have been gutted by looters who cared nothing for the people who worked their entire lives to open a business. So when I say "lived experiences", I'm not talking about watching an hour of Louder with Crowder, or slowing down a clip of Ben Shapiro. I mean actual, on the ground, lived experience. And I think if you re-read what I said, you'll notice that I do agree with certain leftist talking points as well.

There's a great idea in there with mixing this setting with documentary-esque cinematography, but I'd rather have documentary-esque cinematography in the style of Terrence Malick, Ron Fricke and Emmanuel Lubezki, rather than an incomprehensible mess. They could've kept the handheld with better shots and improved everything about the film's atmosphere and visual storytelling, is what I'm saying, by just that change.

So much so, the rightwing politicians in the EU seem radical-left to the US. That is how bad it is. And don't AD HOM me with bullshit like lefties are just COMMUNISTS. look at Scandinavia, central Europe, how GOOD THE POEPLE LIVE IN COMPARISON TO THE US. and ONLY because the most populous don't believe right-wing crap like the US does. actually, just look at Scandinavian countries, or Northern Europe in general. ok, higher taxes, but SO MANY SOCIAL PROGRAMS it is literally impossible to be even homeless f.e. in Finland. @Gabriel España I'm not sure where you're finding "Full blown communist" countries aside from maybe some small groups like aboriginal Tibetans. The neither USSR, the DPRK nor the CCP ever achieved either a socialist or communist society. All they ever reached was state capitalist systems, where instead of corporations privately controlling the means of production for profit they instead had the state controlling the means of production for profit. Socialism means workers controlling their own work and peoples needs being met by default, it has a definition that those countries didn't or don't fit. It's not like bankruptcy, you can't just declare your capitalist economy socialist and that makes it so.

4 maanden geleden
Gabriel España +4
Gabriel España

@Dislexual Well there aren't many truely socialist countries to choose from, they're either capitalist or full blown communist (no the nordic countries aren't socialist, they're capitalist with a social safety net, they literally requested that Bernie Sanders stop using them as an example as socialist countries). But socialism is closer to communism than capitalism so lets go with that, The USSR, the most prominent communist country ever, had a much larger gap where the very small ruling class held all the power and wealth and the rest of the population was quite literally starving to death. The same can be seen with any other country that has embraced communism such as Venezuela, North Korea, Cuba, etc. People for the most part aren't starving to death in developed capitalist countries, though there is a growing homeless population particularly in warm costal cities. But of course we can help fix these issues without going full Marx. But that's the issue with the 2 party system, there's no room for nuance, it's all or nothing for either side. So in essense, yes socialism is worse than capitalism by a wide margin. But obviously that doesn't mean that capitalism should run amok, controlled capitalism is the best system we've got for ensuring both freedom and equality.

@star wars prequels and sequels defender for ever I like both for different reasons. PoE is a gorgeous film with wonderful songs. Exodus also has beautiful imagery at times, but works as a deconstruction of myth, showing how a series of random, unfortunate events can be twisted into the divine over time. OR, how the divine can work with natural law to achieve its goals, depending on how you wish to view it.

Super appreciate the recognition of the grim relation of this movie to reality. Far too many people will just over look it because they can't see it being possible... because they choose to close their eyes, or just don't see the path from our point a to the point b that Elysium represents.

The worst part of this movie is that in real life, factory workers wouldnt try to pull the machine apart to try and help him. Factory work effectivly lobotomises its workers and i have seen videos where they simply pull the body out of the way, it gets cleaned up and an hour later they go back to work. You might think this is a dystopian future. This is already happening in 3rd world contries.

I remember seing this movie for the first time. It does not hide away the fact that it's about class war.
