Fun fact: In the original script of this movie, the machines were using humans' nervous systems for processing power, not just harvesting body heat for energy. I love this idea and think it makes a lot more sense, so even if the executives vetoed the idea, I still headcanon that the humans have it all wrong and that's still what's really happening.

@luckymouse1988 I've always reasoned that a large part of why the Matrix is so life-like and _real_ for its inhabitants is that most of the processing of the virtual reality in terms of sight, sound and whatnot are taken up by the bluepills' own brains, i.e. the Matrix simply provides the inputs to the still-functional sensory processes in the brain, while letting the brain form its own conclusions as to how to best render that environment. For example if you look at the available input data in our eyeballs it's absolutely trash as far as cameras go, but the real magic happens when your visual cortex performs the real-time Photoshop necessary to present a full-quality video feed.

13 dagen geleden

@luckymouse1988 that would still be the interpretation of the humans in the movie. What I think, specially after seeing the Animatrix, although I know that's being told by the machines, about how the machines went out of their way to coexist with us. Is that them doing the matrix thing is the best way they got to keep the silly monkeys that burned up the sky alive and not hurting themselves.

One thing should be mentioned: Morpheus pulled multiple people from the Matrix thinking they were the 'One' and they all died. Cypher watched it happen over and over again and it was one of the reasons he betrayed him. It's not in the film, but in the script that Cypher said something akin to "He's been telling all of them they can fight the Agents, none of them survived. So here's my advice if you see an Agent. Run". Eventually Morpheus found Neo but the part that that he killed multiple innocent people to do that is not even mentioned.

@AnhNH I had heard somewhere that a contributing factor to Cypher's betrayal was that when they pulled him out of the Matrix he had some pre-existing nerve damage that made him unable to smell or taste in the Real: only in the Matrix could he taste anything. It's one of the reasons why he talks about food so often, why he can drink Dozer's booze without cringing, why he's eating steak at The Meeting, why he's specifically sick of "the same g-d- goop every day" over any other hardship he might have mentioned. I thought it was a compelling addition to his character :)

Another thing about the window washing scene that I think was intentional, is that, having that thing happening while he is being "dressed down" by his boss, is very odd. It serves to remove a lot of the sting and authority of his supervisor. Because....Neo just keeps getting distracted, and watching the squeaky cleaning wands go up and down. It's fairly comical with it's absurdist tone. It feels like something that might happen in a Monty Python skit. Where this Really Serious Thing is happening....and the janitor comes in and starts loudly vacuuming in the room. Undercutting any sense of threat or power from the speaker. To me, this feels like one of those times that "The One, could reshape the Matrix, as he saw fit." That Neo, unconsciously did this, because he was probably thinking "Man I'd rather being doing ANYTHING than listening to this asshole....." *squeak, squeak, sssquuuuueak* *Stops listening to his boss and just watches that for a bit* Then when he finally snaps back, he realizes the guy didn't even notice he wasn't paying attention, but that he was done. So he just kind of nods and is like "yes sir." Reprimand over, leave room.

@Marco Some people do think it’s the main point of the film and I’m just arguing against that. The issue is, everyone wants to try and be as progressive as they can, and multiple creators have claimed that their work decades ago had some hidden message relating to some modern movement. Take JK Rowling for example, the amount of crap she’s spewed about claiming that her works have multiple chars relating to the LGBT community. It’s a sick attempt to receive any form of applause for being so progressive. Maybe the sisters did vent their struggles out in the Matrix trilogy, maybe not, but I’m just a bit weary with everyone claiming that they’re so inclusive in works that show no clear evidence of said inclusitivioty

@Zia Nobody said the main point of the movie was the Trans allegroy, just that it was an impprtant aspect of it that the Wachowskis have said themeves. Zia

@TheQuacken I know what it means, I never said the movie couldn’t have more interpretations. Maand geleden

Maand geleden

@TheQuacken Yes but as a writer myself, telling a story is the main thing when it comes to producing high quality films. You integrate the messages and motifs along the way. World building is a key aspect to storytelling, as is symbolism, characters and messages that coincide with the themes. You need a story in order for these conventions to work. While again, they could have made this elaborate universe to express their feelings in some way, it is not the main focus nor is it specifically a LGBT film. Making such connections is a bit of a long shot considering the other elements that come into play.

For Keanu this was a major bridge point to John Wick, not nearly as important of a movie as a whole, but a very important movie for *him*. This established him as a serious actor & gave him the cred that made people realize he'd be game for extreme amounts of weapons training. This is how we got a 50+ Keanu Reeves that knows how to kill a man 50+ different ways, despite the fact that in real life he's way, way to nice to ever lay hands on someone irl.

Maand geleden
Queen Ursula

@Captain Fantastic It was important for its impact on how movies are cast, choreographed, and shot. It was also a huge impact on Keanu's career as it reminded everyone who he was and proved he was still more than willing and able to put "break my back" level effort into his work. He personally did a car stunt that would have killed him if it didn't go right. The man went through special forces training and actually learned how to kill a man several dozen different ways just. to sell. the character. No, oh course its not the fucking Matrix! One thing that made this movie stick in my teenage mind was how I somehow made a "full out" run home from my friends after it without once stopping, slowing down, being out of breath after or passing out until I went to bed 4hrs later (About 0.5 mile distance, nowadays I blame adrenaline & the fact I had 5mins to get home on time for supper but back then I was confused as fuck for months).

Even as a kid I knew that when they were inside the matrix the screen has a green tint. I love that detail. 9:33 how Neo’s voice goes from organic to electronic is one of my favorite little details in this classic movie. Or whatever you want to call it the sound design was awesome

This is a great movie, and the directing and cinematography is truely inspired. So many missed opportunities in the sequels though. The trilogy would have been much better if it continued as sci-fi horror rather than sci fi action.

Neo coming off that broken neck in the training sequence really added to his performance of him looking stiff, rigid and green around the gills compared to Morpheus.

I like this movie, the premise of reality being a simulation is amazing, it’s such a great idea, but the achievement of self awareness in the matrix could’ve been better if they didn’t introduce the “chosen one” part. That’s more of a classic movie trope, it really didn’t need it.

Don Davis score is one of my favorite things in the entirety of the film. The way he uses the orchestra and doesn’t rely on the common music structure of a film score. How he uses the diatonic scale in the orchestra and the choir to represent humanity’s struggle, and chromatic scales to represent the machines and agents. Every cue is so perfectly calculated! Don Davis himself mentioned how the initial idea in the score is the focus on the theme of reflection, the call and response between the french horns and the trumpets is the representation of that idea.

One of my favorite little touches in the office scene is how robotic the agents are. If you went to a cubicle to try to find someone, and didn't see them, your first instinct would be to look around the immediate area, but because they're inhuman programs, their first instinct is to begin scanning the office top-down, to the point that even as Neo fumbles out behind them, they don't have any notice that he's there because he's not in the part he's searching. They haven't revealed what the Matrix is yet but they're already showing how inhuman they are.

I saw The Matrix for the first time in 2019. When I saw it, I thought it was dated and full of tropes, even though I knew that it was actually the source of most of those tropes and defined an era of cinema. It's hard for me to separate those ideas in my mind.

13:36 . In Australia the 'WALK' signals are already green. It was the one of the lynchpins of the movie being filmed there. The dot matrix imagery of crosswalk signs is notoriously hard to edit in post production so they chose Sydney to film in so they at least wouldn't need to retouch the scenes later.

I just wanna say, in response to the suggestion that seeing it as a trans allegory is a reach, I think it was Lily Wachowski who said explicitly that it is, though it's presented in a way that's acceptable to cis folks. In case anyone was in doubt. It's absolutely an allegory. Which I think is important to make known because part of the reason there's a Matrix 4 is to reclaim the use of the red pill and set people straight, from what I hear, so it's like, canon, whether people like it or not ^_^

Maand geleden
Colonel Creeper
Colonel Creeper

@BurningFyre People get too analytical with it. The fact that most of the metaphor breaks down if you think too much about it doesn't mean it doesn't have that significance. And I prefer not to try and think of the sequels as a continuation of the metaphor, because the metaphor breaks all the way down in the sequels

Maand geleden
BurningFyre +4

As a träns, it’s really blatant if you’re watching for it. Neo and Trinity’s entire opening talk is basically veiled language for encouraging someone to come out, to “crack his egg” as it’s called. Smith only ever refers to Neo with his dead name, despite everyone else using his literal “new” name. Smith straight up tells Neo that he can go back into the closet in the interrogation scene, as well as pointing out his two lives (his cis mask and his real trans self). The red pill itself is a reference to estrogen, which is a hormone drug many trans women use and at the time came as a red pill. The Wachowski sisters (who are also trans btw) wrote a great analogy into their story.

I remember watching The Matrix on dvd a lot as a kid, but I only enjoyed it for the surface level entertainment. As a kid, all the talk of philosophy and the real vs fake world just went right over my head, I enjoyed seeing the machines, the action sequences, etc. Revisiting it as an adult I see what I wasn't picking up and it makes me like the movie a lot more. The other two movies I remember were... okay, I have to revisit them too, but I wish they expanded more on the fact that they didn't find Neo right away, that they went through several others before him, as well as what the two sequels mean in the grand scheme of it all. Is The One an actual prophecy that will destroy the Matrix and free humanity, is it really just a computer program The Matrix came up with to give humans something to distract them, make them think they escaped when in reality they're actually in ANOTHER Matrix with no real hope of escape? I understand movies cut content for the sake of runtime, but I feel like some of the bits they cut are still super important, and leaves more questions without them.
