One really sad thing about this movie is that if Jerry hadn't given Joe a second chance, his mother would see her son die the day after his big break.

@CB Mr.CoolPerson It’s okay if you enjoy the trope, but a lot of people understandably don’t like it because it’s been overused a lot in books and movies. Especially with this specific story because there’s so much potential and it would have been all thrown away with the “it was just a dream ending.”

I just teared up. I also imagined there was some purpose in my life, that I needed to find one because my brain would tell me I’d never amount to anything, no matter how hard I tried. This lesson silences that negative thought and really makes me live in the moment. Maybe just for one moment, I can feel content.

During the worst parts of my life, my mantra's been "No second spent breathing is a second wasted." And sometimes when bad memories or feelings resurface, it's that thought that keeps me going. You missed a win point. Although Joe’s big performance has some of the most beautiful shots in the film, its runtime is incredibly small, not even two minutes long. Compared to the ninety minutes of the whole film, it is almost disappointing how fast the moment comes and goes. That reflection is so meaningful because even though the moment cinematically is so sweet, glorious, and visually pleasing, much like how Joe feels while in the performance, it is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Joe finds that out immediately. The moment we’ve all been waiting for doesn’t even satisfy the film or the viewer, in the same way it doesn’t satisfy Joe’s ambitions and success.

What I love about Soul is that it subverts the usual "pursue your dreams and don't care about anyone else" message that many, many western films have. It says that you can pursue your passions and have dreams but not being "successful" in those areas doesn't mean you've failed at life. There is no defining "purpose" or "meaning" to people's lives - all you have to do is live it.

12:55 That is a scarily close representation of depression. The negative self talks can really crush your soul, and until you find a different perspective to see them as the lies they really are, they are the only reality you have, and can distort anything else trying to come in. That part hit real close to home for me.

If we think about it, 22 is probably the smartest “human” in all of history. @supernat1 I'm assuming here that the film pokes fun at the Christian believe that everyone has a purpose by being created by God. But the joke is that there is no such thing as "regular old living" in society. God made us to be a part of the "word" i.e. nature yet joe doesn't really know how to do that by the end of the film despite what he went through. If Joe never had the experiences he did have in the "spirit world" would the film actually change? I would say "no" since Joe appreciated what his ex-student did for him as a cat. Joe was already living at the start of the film. So why did he feel down at all? The film makes no sense unless it is used to go against religion(s).

One Huge win has to be the clever way the movie presents itself. During the opening credits the last words on screen say “Disney/Pixar presents...” and after Joes final monologue the title of the movie pops up right before the ending credits. To signify that Joe found his soul and finally truly started to live. It’s just a tiny detail that I just absolutely love.

as a musician myself, who is still waiting for my big break, this movie shattered my heart into smithereens. Because me & Joe have one giant thing in common - our passion and dedication to pursue our biggest dream made us take a lot of little things and life in general for granted. Propably if I saw my life like Joe I'd think ''this was meaningless'' at first, too. Whenever something cool happens, I enjoy it but in the end I brush it off because it didn't lead me to my success (spare me in replies, I know how it sounds). When Dorothea tells the story about the fish looking for the ocean, I paused the movie to cry my eyes out. I still have no idea what my spark is, but right now all that matters is what this movie taught me - you're already in the ocean, enjoy every flavor, every sound, laughter, time spent with family like it's the best thing ever. Because it is. I began writing a gratitude notebook, everyday write down things you're grateful for. I'll be coming back to this movie anytime I need a lil reminder to seize the day.

I’d been thinking to myself "I just gotta get into med school then my life can finally start" cos after that I would have finally lived up to the expectations so many people in my life had for me for as long as I could remember. That was my purpose and failing to reach that just kinda broke me for a while. It struck a chord with me to watch a movie that reminded you what living was all about again. Telling you there is no purpose to live up to besides just experiencing life itself and all the simple things. @Andrew Cheshire One amazing thing that I know Pixar does (other companies might do it too) is that they really dedicate themselves to studying what they are animating and being as accurate as they can. One example was that they studied the way water moves and works for hours if not days so they could animate Finding Nemo. IIrc they did the same kind of thing for guitar playing in Coco and I wouldn't be surprised if they did it for piano playing for Soul. They really try to make everything as accurate as possible which is just awesome.

This movie makes me cry every time I watch it. I'm a professional musician, and this last year has (obviously) been very difficult. It's been very difficult for everyone of course, but I felt like... my purpose was gone. Or at least stalled. And when I first watched this movie I sobbed at the end, because I finally felt like I was going to be ok. That it's fine if your "purpose" is just living life and enjoying the little things. So thank you for covering this movie. There's certainly a lot of good in it.

This movie was an experience. I watched it for the first time with 2 of my friends, all 3 of us had suffered with suicidal urges and some of those urges had put one of my friends in hospital once. We were expecting to just have a chill night and watch this. When Twenty Two is sitting on the steps and she goes "maybe im not good enough for living" we ended up just melting and crying and the longer the movie went on the worse we got. It was a beautiful experience and Im glad I got to experience it with others.

Soul is such a different movie. It is not your regular ' kids ' movie (I hate it when people automatically count every animation film as a kids film and discount the importance of themes in all of these films because ' its just for kids '). It is just so mature, thoughtful and soulful (pun partially intended). You begin to discover many other aspects of this film on each viewing. It begins to resonate with you even more as you grow up. It truly is a wonderful film. If Pixar keeps going on this path, I am sure that they have a bright future ahead of them.

@The Technocrat It's also not a great idea to think every animated film out there is a kid's film, because there are animated films with adult themes. Films that parents would probably be uncomfortable with their kids watching if it wasn't for people immediately associating the words animated feature with children. Plague Dogs anyone?

@Kathryn Cutler I agree with you. This is actually what I meant in my comment. I meant to say that people tend to count every animated film as a ' kids ' film (dumb and filled with body humor). I am not saying that kids cannot appreciate rich themes in a film. This is what I also meant for Soul as you get to appreciate its deeper meanings as you mature more in life but kids can interpret the messages of the film, too. Too often, I see making this mental barrier between ' kids ' films and ' mature ' films which is wrong. Just because something is being appreciated by kids doesn't make it of any less value. It has a lot of depth which remains unseen by adults out of ignorance or a strange notion of disinterest. Films like Soul are for all ages. Most well made ' kids ' films are for all ages.

Okay, okay I know you weren't saying this precisely, but this is a kids movie. Saying it's "just" a kids movie is degrading and wrong, but it is a movie for kids. It's just as important that kids see and internalize these themes at the age they are now. And anyone can appreciate the beautiful animation that this movie serves up. Once again I mean no disrespect you have a nice comment, but I see so many people claiming that a movie isn't for kids just because it doesn't dumb itself down. As if kids can't appreciate these kinds of movies.

My favorite moment when Joe first plays with Dorothea Williams is when I realized that since he didn't know the chords for that song very well, he looked at the cello player's hands to figure it out. And, Terry is the best character. I rewatched Soul just for Terry.

One of my (many) favorite parts about this movie are the designs of the Jerrys and Terry. The way they were given designs, names, personalities, and voices that weren't immediately feminine or masculine-coded, because they are genderless representations of the universe beyond such concepts, was super cool to me. Plus they just give off a really soothing aura which I'm sure is intentional as they are the caretakers and nurturers of humanity. Idk they are just really cool to me and I loved watching them! (Oh also the message of the movie punched an irreparable hole in my gut, it really spoke to me and is a message I've never really seen in a movie before).

So a fun detail that I noticed even after my first time watching: When the movie starts Joe is really careless and clumsy and that’s the reason why he gets himself killed. When he is a “mentor” there isn’t really a way to be clumsy but when he gets into the cats body he acts clumsy again. He jumps from the bed and falls on the ground, he accidentally scratched 22 after not being able to sit on his shoulders and you can go on for a while. The more he is in this body the more he gets used to being careful and walking elegantly like cats do. When he finally gets back into his body he suddenly isnt that clumsy anymore and that’s because he learned from being a cat. It’s a small detail and easily overlooked but I thought it was worth pointing out.

@J Cool Guy 15 When he was rushing he avoided death but when noticed he could die he stopped to react and look. Then immediately dropped into a manhole. The rest of the film is no different than this in that Joe is still not looking at the full picture. The ending is the new manhole. This is a "satanic" concept of thinking: to never think of the larger narrative or "he's gonna getchya!"

1. Thank you for this channel; it brightens my day, and I'm sure lots of other's, too, and we really need that right now. 2. I'd love to see you win the comedy Oscar, starring Sylvester Stallone. Critics panned it, and most people I know have no idea the movie exists, which is sad because it's a lot of fun. I mean, Sly in a 1930's period comedy that uses classic tropes to elicit laughs? That's a winner.

Cinemawins is one of my all time favorite channels on YouTube but you missed the mark really hard on this one. You’re usually so good at noticing the tiny hidden details that make the movie special but this video just feels like the bare minimum for me. I get that you’re not gonna be as detailed with movies you don’t like as much but there’s so much more to Soul than you give it credit for and in my opinion if you’re not gonna do a deep dive on a movie it’s almost not worth making a video. Maybe I’m biased because I’m really attached to this particular movie but idk, if you can find the good in The Last Airbender or After Earth you should be able to look more closely at Soul. Also removing a win because Joe’s mom was voiced by Clair Huxtable was dumb, I’m sorry. I wanna make it clear, I LOVE your channel and this video was still very good (like that part about 22 looking different from the other new souls because she developed a personality in her time at the you seminar—that was a genuinely excellent observation that I didn’t catch in the many times I’ve watched Soul), I just wanted to give you my feedback as a longtime fan.

This film saved my life. I'm sure it saved many others as well. I was debating whether or not my life mattered when this film was released. I felt like I had nothing to contribute to the world. I felt like I needed to do something with my life otherwise I should leave. Then I saw the Epiphany scene. I realized I am doing something with my life. I'm living it. Every story I write, every song I make, and every video I edit is something. Every food I eat, every meme I send, every moment I spend with my loved ones is also something. I'm always doing something.

It only works when you’ve already trained the children into it. Teachers often use their own personal visual and/or aural cue that they need the class’ attention as it saves their voices, but they have to set expectations at the start of the year and train children in its use with praise and rewards. So quiet coyote probably was that teacher’s cue.

It's a tiny detail but one of my favorite scenes in the movie is showing the SOUL title card at the end of the movie after Joe says he's going to start living. It's pretty symbolic since title cards typically show the start of something. Therefore, this symbolizes the start of Joe's life and it makes me so warm everytime I see this singular moment
