@cikame NRS music has for the most part been very forgettable and hard to hear in game. I feel like they can take notes from basically any other fighting game franchise thats currently ongoing. Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, Dragon Ball FighterZ, even KI deserves a shoutout. I dont know, for a fighting game, music tends to matter a lot to hype you up for the fight. The recent MK's (and even the injustice games) really lack in the music department. Also for orchestral music thats memorable, I would check out Super Broly's theme from FighterZ. Other than that, yeah I dont think orchestral is the right choice.

My parents never cared if I played Mortal Kombat, but they would never let me play games like Halo. Jason Blalock +7
Jason Blalock

@GeneralBolas Oh, so what distinguishes the unique vision of (I had to look it up) Scott Derrickson's Doctor Strange? How does Thor 1 fit within the filmography of Kenneth Branagh? In what ways do you feel the visual direction of Iron Man 3 typifies the oeuvre of Shane Black? Be honest, most of the direction in the MCU is the definition of "workmanlike" - by design. The lack of strong directorial\auteur visions is a deliberate part of the MCU's quest to provide films which are usually solidly "good" but rarely shoot for actual greatness. And they are successful with the masses specifically because of that lack of artistic pretention. Pieces like Thor Ragnarok, GOTGv2, or WandaVision, with a strong auteur vision and ambition, are the exception within the MCU, not the norm.

9 maanden geleden
GeneralBolas +1
GeneralBolas

@Jason Blalock "Workman-like competence" doesn't usually lead to movies that make $500+ million per film. Profit is rewarded by budget. Bay's unique direction style is something audiences liked, so it led to budget. Anderson's lack of style didn't lead to anything audiences particularly loved, so it didn't lead to budget.

9 maanden geleden
Jason Blalock +4
Jason Blalock

@GeneralBolas "Workman-like competence only gets you so much budget in Hollywood. " Funny, that's how I'd describe the majority of MCU direction. (With a few exceptions.)

9 maanden geleden
GeneralBolas +8
GeneralBolas

It's not so much less budget as less unique style. You can always spot a Bay movie, even from movies that are trying desperately to be a Bay movie. Love them or hate them, a Bay movie has Bay's visual style stamped all over it. Anderson doesn't really have that. Because he doesn't have a particular signature style, all that's left is his ability to deliver a movie on time, on budget, and as more or less what was asked of him. Workman-like competence only gets you so much budget in Hollywood.

Thank you! I saw this with a friend when I was a teenager. For us this was a defining movie. It should have been rated R but they did what they could to hit the rating and, especially at the time, I thought they nailed it. This film is responsible for changing Kano for good and allowing the same actor to portray Shang Tsung again in MK 11 Aftermath. Not to mention Christopher Lambert covered a ton of travel expenses out of his own pocket. I'm looking forward to the new one and their ability to take this to another level. Edit: Now that I've watched you missed a few. Kano's give me a break and when he pulls out the knife explaining how he used it on her friend. Trevor Goddard was Kano. Rest well man, you are missed. That first fight where Liu realized things are a lot more dangerous than he knew. The first exchange between Liu and Raiden. Raiden after that fight with the goons where he claps and says "What are you going to do about them?" with 30 plus more now in the room. The fact that Shang can turn into souls he consumed and he appeared as Cage's mentor. There might be a measure to the light color as it relates to Liu Kang. In the final fight when he has removed all doubt from his mind he in plain or white lighting. He knows who he is and what must be done. Green may be his guilt, blue his doubt, red his fear. Just a theory.

I agree, I hate when people say a CGI movie from the 90's doesn't how up well. IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO! I still love Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, the 1st instant of a cinematic (tv to movie) universe in 95 (I was 15) and then that transformation process was gold... It still holds up when you understand what was available at the time. Every video game movie is cool, had Mario Brothers, Double Dragon & Street Fighter (the latter I still remember being excited about after seeing) not been made, had Hollywood not kept trying.... We wouldn't have gotten Assassins Greed Detective Pikachu Sonic The Hedgehog AND MORTAL KOMBAT! The later two were the best by wide critical & fan acclaim (for the most part) & 2021 MK looks to set the bar EVEN HIGHER! But even on the low keybsuggest that anything before Mortal Kombat 95 was anything other then lackluster is (to me) just plain disrespectful to those movies. I'm glad Hollywood didn't give up on Video Games for movie ideas. We would not have Mortal Kombat 95 or even Pikachu & Sonic had someone in Hollywood made the Video Game movies stop at MK95. All those movies are laughably corny look back but dammit if I wasn't excited to see M. Bison flying across the screen played by Raul (Gomez Addams) Julia, Jean-Claude (Col. Guile & Jean Vilain) Van Damme, and The beautiful Ming-Na (Chun-Li, Mulan AND Melinda May) Wen. Jean was the headline because he was the most known actor. But they even got E. Honda casting right. God those video game movies ha e a place in my heart & should never be sandbagged.

I was introduced to Mortal Kombat when I visited my cousin at the age of 6. He showed me his Amiga computer and the first Mortal Kombat game. Later, I got my own Amiga and it had MK2. Then, I saw the movie. And since then I saw it about 20 times or so, enough to memorize the whole script and all dialogues, heh. Yet I stil come back to it, every once in a while. I liked the fights and how they were done with Real martial artists like Robin Shou and Linden Ashby, Shang Tsung was an awesome bad guy and Goro's roar wił haunt to me to the end of my life. Also, the theme song is So awesome I'm glad it got refused for MK11 trailer and even made it in some way in "tournament" stage theme. This will always be in my top 5 not only video game movies, but also favorite movies of all time. I like how the 10 tournament plot was worked into the game, how Kano and Shang Tsung influenced their game version and the many references to the movie that the games made over the years, like Johnny's rivarly with Goro. I'm very thankful you finally got the chance to win this movie, Lee, though personally I would add a couple more wins, like: - Kano's "'Ello baby, did chu miss me?" - Shang Tsung's "Fatality" after the first tournament fight, as well as "It has begun!" - Johnny whooping Goro's ass for crushing his "500$ sunglasses" - the fact that Liu fighting demon warriors by the end is basically an Endurance match (and there's 6 of them, one for every other character from the original game) - Shao Kahn saying "Excellent *laugh* Flawless Victory" at the Very end of the credits And one retroactively for reuniting the cast of this movie, specifically Raiden, Cage, Sonya and Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat 11! Here's hoping that the reboot is gonna be as awesome as it looks.

I was obsessed with this film when I was 10/11 when it came out. I literally memorised about the first half of the whole script. It stood out in the video rental store coz there was only one picture on the back, and it was of Goro silhouetted, and I thought fuckin' rad. Still a favourite flick, I don't care who says it's bad, it's tonally pretty great, the fights are a bit mixed but mostly good, and it has a charm that could only exist in the mid 90s. The Power Rangers mandatory gritty reboot from a few years back tried to find the same tone I think and failed utterly. But this film will always be a favourite. Maybe not in the top 10, but definitely an honourable mention :)

The theme from Mortal Kombat (and a few others from soundtrack, including the awesome "Juke Joint Jezebel" and "Art vs. Goro") is still on my regular workout playlist. MK95 was such a fun movie for 18yr old me and I'm going to watch it with my son before we go watch the new one. Little subtleties like acknowledging Scorpion and Sub Zero being mortal enemies but are both working for Shang Tsung really accentuate the positives of this film. Kano is pretty much perfect (and Trevor Goddard did such a great job the games changed Kano's nationality to Australian to match it), Sub Zero's ice effects are awesome, Reptile being so much quicker than the other ninjas in homage to his game iteration, and (for the time) Goro was amazingly cool. Love this film and have high hopes for the reboot. Flawless victory (c'mon, like I was gonna finish this post with anything else).

I loved this movie as a kid, I love it to this day. I was 11 when it came out. I... think I'd played some of the games at the time, but everyone then knew at least OF them, so this movie was just... amazing. I love the campy, cheesy 'just go with it' mentality. Even the second one, as awful as it is, has fun moments. I'm hopeful for the new one.

I remember seeing this film in the theaters when it first came out. I was in there alone, it was a matinee. And I was really high. And that dark theater suddenly exploded into the scream 'MORTAL KOMBAAAT!" and that awesome song started to play, while the darkness suddenly was awash with orange flames, making everything so surreal. Columns of flame 2 stories high licked across the MK logo, while that music pumped into my brain. I was instantly in love with the film. xD

I put this on last year intending for it to be background noise while I worked and I got sucked right into it. Total nostalgia. I never was good enough at games to play so I didn't care if it was close to the game or not; I just thought it was fun Well now you clearly need to do an EGA Event Horizon. One of my favorites.

I consider this a good movie. The fights, humor, cheese, actors, and the MUSIC is amazing. For a 90s movie this rocks I always thought raiden said he nothing else to teach him is because LK is the chosen one and always could’ve won but he bailed so little arrested development

Loved this movie. The soundtrack. Yes, the "special effects"...were...ummm...less than desirable, but man ohh man, that theme, the visuals and the cheese. This was fan service in its best form.

Speaking of awesome 90s movies, how about Stargate? It's an awesome 90s movie that spawned 3 TV series and several (kinda) good movies. Not only does it have an amazing director, Roland Emmerich who made a ton of great films, but it has a great composer David Arnold... and I'm going to keep asking every time for this movie. Cause it is awesome.

This movie is still great because it followed the first game's plot. The actors, music, sets and fight choreography still holds up in my eyes.

From what I have read, Art Lean is supposed to be a live-action interpretation of the Great Kung Lao. Both were beaten by Goro, and had their souls taken by Shang Tsung. Any thoughts?

Saw this at the cinema when it came out. We were in a group of 13 and 14 year olds. Absolutely loved it then and still love it now. That the sequels were done by different people and instantly went downhill makes me sad.

Let's get one thing straight here; This is STILL one of the greatest movie adaptions of a videogame EVER!! And it has nothing to do with the quality of the CGI, or the clear limitations with practical effects, or even the rating.. but the fact that they kept it as close to the source material as possible, and made it feel like we were watching the actual game.

I finally was able to recognize one of the CinemaWins teasers for the first time! (For anyone guessing, it’s “Pixar’s Soul.” It might look to real for your eyes to deceive how much CGI can be today.)

It was most definitely 90s cheesy, but we loved it nevertheless. The music was what really cemented the movie together. The fights were fun to watch and we loved seeing our favorite characters come to life. Too bad MK: Annihilation was done so badly.

I’m gonna be honest, I believe I watched the sequel first, and my child self loved it. I have since watched it a few times and still love it. Sure it’s a horrible, crappy, sequel to a lackluster film, but excuse me if I want to indulge in Annihilation. Plus, there’s less actual official Kombat battles because the rules have been broken. It’s only when the other two Elder Gods step in and re-establish Mortal Kombat Rules with the final fight, it’s actually better than the original because it’s faithful to its setup. The rules are broken and fights break out without setup or provocation. The fights just are.
