The fact that they used a real-world news story for the villain’s motivation because it was so unbelievably evil that it somehow perfectly fit into a Bond movie is both hilarious and terrifying.

Sadly it didn’t pay off. The twist of “This isn’t about oil, it’s about water” came out of nowhere, the only allusion to it we got was the taxi driver muttering smg about how it rained too much or too little, and in the end, it didn’t lead anywhere. We saw a short montage of villagers running put of water and forced to leave, and coming back by the end of the film, but that’s it. You could’ve stuck with oil and the movie wouldn’t have changed.

Bond is referring to when the double agent tried to kill M at the beginning of this movie, right? Well, Greene didn't try to kill M, it was the double agent. But I guess since Greene apparently ordered the kill, then it's basically the same thing, hu?

people see quantum as an individual bond movie and don't see it as a continuation of casino royale and it took more of the story from the book and the title. Bond is in pain and wants revenge but does all the things he does bring him to his quantum of "solace" solace= comfort or consolation in a time of distress or sadness. and well after Vesper's death, you can see why people rate it as a bad bond movie it doesn't conform to the bond aesthetic because it's a revenge story, not a bond movie.

Casino Royale was so good, I can understand why some people thought this one was a bit of a letdown. But I liked it. @V - Trigger she uses sex as a weapon. It would be odd to undo that just because he is Bond. Plus why would she sleep with him after he drove with Dominic alone and his revelation to he was trying to avenge someone. Bond really became detached Bond after his conversation with Yusef. I did crack up when Bond appeared to drove off angrily after Camille rejected him by the way those tires screeched with the rubble. Camille brought her Scorpio ♏️ game on to this film 😍.

tho I still say Olga was a better Bond girl. the fact that, she never even slept with him, just makes her more unique than all the other bond girls. her character literally had no no reason to have any romance with Bond, they were only together coz they wanted revenge from the same guy. and I'm glad that the filmmaker didn't forced another unnecessary romantic arc on her

i don't think greene is the villain. bond spends the entire movie searching for mr. white. in the plane he tells camille they are both using greene to get to someone else. greene fits most of the villain tropes but the genius of quantum is that instead of having a major henchman like jaws or hinx to hinder the hero he has basically a sub-villain in greene to confront before getting to the real villain. for the plot, mr white is that true villain... but for this story the most important villain is bond himself and his internal struggle to deal with his contradicting feelings about vesper on one hand having fallen in love with her but on the other hand hating her for "betraying" him and being a double agent, the one thing he is programmed to seek out and destroy. it is easier to hate her as the double agent because then he doesn't have to deal with the reality that the woman he loved died.

Exactly. Le Chifre was cold and calculated for the most part - while also being in between two nails so to speak. Contrary, Green is just psychotic and gives little credit to his own existence, thus he is difficult to pressure because he doesn't have any comfort zone to begin with. He's always in a grey area where you don't really know what to expect from him. A slimey guy who can slither between higher powers and work situations to his benefit. Much more akin to real-life behind the curtain "villains".

Wow, I didn't expect to see this movie on this channel - at the very least I'd have expected some of the other more popular Bond movies first, but I'm very glad you've done this one. It gets a lot of criticism and hate, a lot of it undeserved. Sure, the movie does take multiple viewings to enjoy to the fullest, but I think it's actually very well put together, with mostly memorable and compelling characters, brilliant action sequences, a more realistic and gritty plot, and Craig turning in another brilliant performance as Bond. It deserves praise in places other than just comment sections, and I'm glad it's finally getting some recognition.

@kev3d @Paul Boland Firstly, I never said that ALL of the characters were compelling, only that MOST of them were. Examples: Medrano, Mr White, Bond himself, Camille, Mathis, and M. This movie had plenty of memorable characters in my opinion. However, I do agree that Strawberry Fields was one of the weaker characters in this story, as she really didn't have many memorable characteristics - which I'm sure is no fault of the gorgeous and talented Gemma Arterton, she just wasn't given that much to do in the story. Dominic Greene though......I'm more inclined to argue that he's better than most people give him credit for. Evil people aren't always easily recognisable with huge stature, or scars, or enhanced body parts, or even by their charm. I bet a lot of evil people are as outwardly unremarkable as Greene, so it's refreshing to see a different take on a "villain". His creepiness and understated signs of psychosis made him quite dislikeable and a bit unsettling, and as mentioned in the video, I was also quite surprised with the ferocity with which he fought with Bond, it caught me off guard too.

3 maanden geleden

The villain was about as intimidating a shoebox full of kittens. Strawberry Fields looked about as bored as the screenwriters must have been. Her death had no emotional impact, unlike the victim in Goldfinger whose death Fields' was meant to emulate. In other words, they got it right the first time.

@callmecatalyst That's the technical term, but I didn't use it because a) not everyone knows it, so I would have had to define it anyway, and b) of those people who do know it, or rather, have heard of it, quite a few would dismiss what I had to say out of hand _because_ I used it. @Niall “No trope imo” the “O” means opinion. Just because you dont believe in something, doesnt mean it doesnt exist. Also, you have impaled yourself on the point I was making, and still missed it. You saying “at least half the accents are british” is basically the definition of a trope. A trope is a recurrent theme. Half of bad guys having a british accent is a recurrent theme, therefore it is a Trope! and if their accents are of different origin, then they are still different, affirming what I said from the beginning. Now is the case for every single movie in existence? No of course not. Rules have exceptions. “I before E” has more exceptions to it than words that follow the rule. But it is the case for a majority of films, which i re-iterate, makes it a trope.

3 maanden geleden

Looking across all the Bond films at the accents of the main villains you'll find that at least half are British/American in origin or accent. They're are exotic films with locations from across the World. Of course there will be villains with the specific country's accent, But look a little harder and you'll see plenty of allies who are from that same country also have the same accent. They don't terrify me. No trope imo. All in your mind

...whenever the editing of this movie comes up, I dare people to explain to me how Bond gets rid of the last enemy boat in the boat chase ;) They use the quick editing to obscure the fact that it totally doesn't make sense. (What happens is: Bond takes an anchor from his boat, throws it into the other boat that sits on top of his one and then the other boat suddenly gets ripped backwards through the air, away from Bond's boat. No, the other end of the anchor line is not attached to anything, except maybe Bond's boat)

I've always enjoyed QoS, I never understood why it go so much hatred. It's got some stunning shots (one of which had a photo taken behind the scenes that eventually became the cover art for the video game 007: Blood Stone), the most grounded plot of the franchise, and the *second* best Bond girl behind Vesper (if you can really even call either of them that, so much so that I completely forgot they even kissed in this movie and I've seen it half a dozen times). I understand that Quantum as an organization only exists because EON didn't own the rights to Spectre until 2012, but I like it as an idea and it ending up as just an arm of the larger Spectre was a good move, but poorly executed. I would have liked to see Bond spend a few films going after the other seven before tackling the head, but I also understand that that would have extended far beyond the usual Bond actor's tenure.

@needamuffin If you have just finished (like within weeks) one of the most gruelling experiences of your life, and some jackass journalist is asking how keen you are to put yourself through that experience again right away... I don't think an over the top flippant comment is an unreasonable reaction. It would be like asking a boxer who is standing there with three broken bones and a shattered face how eager he is to go into a another fight right away. The fact he has since come back and done another two movies as that character since saying the comment also proves he wasn't done with the character. People see acting as this easy thing. you just stand in front of a camera do a thing and if it's good your done, if not do it again. But like any job it is intense and emotional and draining. Actors also hate being shoehorned into only a single role, so being asked to keep doing more of the same over and over and over is going to grate on the nerves too.

@Chris Goodluck I understand that idea completely, but at the same time "I would rather die than do another movie" is pretty hard to interpret any other way other than he's done with the character.

@needamuffin People regularly misread that line. He said he'd rather die than do another Bond movie now almost immediately after finishing the gruelling filming and promotion of a Bond movie. It was more an indictment of the media and the stress of the job than him implying he was done with the character. Everyone gets exhausted, and acting is a job like any other.

@Clayton Courtney An interesting take and it may have been thrown around, but I think the combination of not owning the rights to Spectre or Blofeld until after Skyfall's release and the questionable nature of what would actually be Craig's last outing of Bond (he originally said he never wanted to play the character again after Skyfall) would have made your vision hard to get out there.

I've always really liked Quantum of Solace. I liked that it tied up Casino Royale's story threads, I loved the imperfect Bond; Daniel Craig has just enough of the polished wit and swagger to be recognisable as Bond, but still makes mistakes and it was here that for me that the theory that Bond/007 is just an eternal code name and it's a different person who gets given that title became film canon. And most of all, I liked that it wasn't "evil guy doing evil things because evil", it was a shady company trying to shamelessly control everything and doing anything to make it happen. It felt real (Even though I didn't know it was based off real events), and that's great. I think the best spy movies are the ones that could actually happen in real life and just be so secretive that we just don't hear about it and this film fits that perfectly for me. I treat Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace as full part 1 & 2 and always watch both together and I'm never disappointed.

I'm actually very glad that you did this movie. I've always felt like it gets a lot of undeserved hate. It's always been a solid entry into the Bond franchise. Craig ALMOST (in my humble opinion) had a near perfect run as Bond. Casino Royale was a masterclass, Quantum was pretty good, Skyfall was a near perfect send-up of the franchise and arguably the best Bond film made to date and No Time to Die by all accounts looks as if it's going to be brilliant. The only shortcoming of his stent as the character was Spectre...which was largely considered to be abysmal. And 3 out of 4 ain't bad.

I LOVE this movie. Craig has never done a bad Bond Movie, it just Royale, Skyfall, and NTTD are so amazing that Spectre and Quantum get picked apart for being not great enough lol, not a bad problem to have. This movie was Critical for setting up spectre, Furthering Craig's Bond, Bond/M mother/son relationship, And furthering the impact of Vespe Lind. Not a perfect film, just damn good and crucial to the Royale/Skyfall, Spectre and NTTD. Without Quantum, Royale's impact fades, and Skyfall's story has No weight, especially the M/Bond Mother son connection, and the Spectre reveal is hallow.

I really like Quantum of Solace. It works nicely as a direct almost extended epilogue to Casino Royale in which Bond is still haunted by the tragedy of Vesper - and that's the proper way to appreciate it. Shaky-Cam action isn't ideal, but the energy of those sequences are effective. The Mathis death scene is one of the series' most poignant moments. The villian is fairly forgettable, but in my opinion Olga Kurylenko is one of the most compelling and autonomously agented Bond girls ever. The title song is awful, but another superb David Arnold score makes up for it.
