They really drove home the whole "hear them, but can't see them." First when the surviving Vet talked about "it starts with one and then you hear them all and it doesn't stop." to the overhead shot of the City Ruins where you can still see no White Spikes but you can clearly hear them, a LOT of of them and the noises don't stop. And of course, when we see the first White Spike up close. The slow zoom in, revealing the Creature and this utterly unsettling sound it makes by just breathing. That was properly fear inducing.

So since monster movies always pull the tactic of keeping the monster hidden, offering glimpses and then having a big reveal near the end, would a monster movie work if: it NEVER actually shows the monster at all? Like, what you imagine will always be scarier than whatever can actually be shown, so it might work in its favor, but at the same time, the audience might feel cheated they didn't get to see it?

I actually liked that Dan, in the "original" timeline, left his family bc that's what his dad did. Maybe he isn't that type of person, but maybe his dad wasn't either? He said he changed after the traumas of the war, so maybe Dan changed with the failure of the mission too

I get the impression that in the future timeline, the time leap stuff hadn't happened. I think that it gets back to some central themes in the movie about war, cycles of violence, etc. Dan was changed by his time in the military. When he was in, he was a hero. He changed the world, and had respect. He could violently and directly solve most of his problems. When he got out, he was no longer a "hero". He was just a guy with no special destiny, teaching high school biology. In a way, both he and his father had lost their places in the world and solved problems with violence. It was only when he saw what path he had been on that he could change, and he was only able to forgive his father when his daughter forgave him.

I enjoyed this movie greatly, but there are two small things stand out to me. How he's honest with his daughter about where he's going and how they didn't have Dorian undermine Dan as the squad leader. They show us that they treat Muri as intelligent and not just a stupid kid, so him being open about being drafted felt right. They set up that Dorian is returning for a third time and they didn't go with the, I know more than the first timer, trope. Dorian does make his displeasure known, but he doesn't openly disregard Dan's orders.

5 maanden geleden

Are we just gonna talk about the conversation with his daughter ? Bad acting all round. Only scene that was funny was the “ shit shit shit” scene at the beginning. This movie could’ve been something great but they’re too funny to be serious actors. what an utter waste of a story. Made absolute no sense from a time travel perspective either. cringe moments between the father and the daughter. Not even real acting. Should’ve had Brad pit do the job as he’s done a zombie apocalyptic role already. Such a shame

Maand geleden

Maybe Dorian was in military and felt Dan's orders are to follow, like second nature (survival instinct or something else) but Dorian still expressed his thoughts about the future war(team die vs team not die) as experienced warrior would in this case or so i think. Dan vs Dorian = No man left behind vs saving the world (a little dying in his own way), they are different views in different wars, can't blame Dan, but i still counted additional deaths for trying to save one(as a really amateur movie critic after seeing many movies, cinemawins and cinemasins i kinda see movies bit different than i used to but still appreciate them nevertheless) . Still, just recently watched the movie and the time travel still kinda gets to me ((especially the first minutes, like let the future live by present dying? I hope all the people from the present to the future were to help get that toxin as only people, as i understood, who were dead before that, could do the jump)(a toxin to the past saved it a little))

To tack on, its actually a real shame, they didn't focus on the switch between who was firing, because it could've been a really cool shot to show them working as a team, or at least to show off how Pratt was paying attention to his team and was trying to provide as much covering fire for the other members who were just booking it down the stairs to escape, but I get why they went with the panic feeling instead, since it's the first time they see/fight a white spike.

24 dagen geleden
Aaron Self
Aaron Self

I noticed that too, like in the stairwell, but if you pay attention, there's two people firing, and the shit shit shit guy definitely stops, and someone else picks up firing, then cut back to him and he starts firing again, I'm assuming it's because of them using cuts to make that scene feel for frantic, it cuts out some part that either A. Shows the switch between shooters, or B. Takes more time in the stairwell to give you the feeling that it's not just him shooting the entire time, but for the sake of the "rushed about to die panic" they just used to many cuts and didn't make it clear that it wasn't JUST one guy firing 300 rounds.

First up, I also really enjoyed the movie, it was fun enough and it even got me to cry a singular tear a couple times. Really glad you mentioned what explains the failed time travel coordinates, because it makes geniune sense for an error to occur on a system which is barely tested. Calculating the coordinates must be a titanic task, so the fact they consistently get accurate placements with a margin of error of 5 feet is astounding Second thing I wanted to talk about; What about Dan's arc doesn't make sense? We see through out the first half of the movie that he has both some anger management issues and is not the kind of person who can easily let go of things. When he's denied the job, he takes it out on the trash can, mailbox and papers he was carrying When he goes to see his dad, he can't let go of what happened in the past with his dad leaving (understandably, yes, but JK Simmons seems to be trying to reconnect and fix his mistakes, which Dan can't see) When he snaps out at his dad, he slams down on the table and leaves. Clearly angry. Multiple times he refuses to let go of someone even if it would be better to let one person die yet everyone else live instead of more people dying in an attempt to save the person. And the attempt fails, so really he got all of the people who jumped down killed (not literally or directly, but due in part to his actions and choices). So even if he's a good person who means good, sometimes meaning good can cause more harm than good. He literally almost let all of humanity die in a suicidal attempt to grab his daughters hand. Which is a totally understandable move from his part, like Star lord trying to beat the crap out of Thanos when he finds out about Gamora. That kind of person is believable that he'd become violent and have to leave. His dad only left him because of that exact same reason. The PTSD, his being in a "dark place", anger management issues, he didn't mean to hurt anyone, he just wasn't capable of stopping himself, and he got better with time. They share a parallel arc, an arc we don't see, but we learn about it through glimpses of the future and his daughter. They didn't need to leave out of hate, spite or malicious intent. They could have geniunely believed their children would live better lives without them there.

@Chris Dufresne The Ewoks would honestly murk the white spikes. And I have proof. The black and grey ewok that's wearing a sabertooth like skull? There's now a Canon explanation for them, and they're actually pretty similar to the white spikes, in that they have a coat that essentially makes them blaster and bullet proof, also have a toxin in their claws and teeth, and basically have to be bludgeoned to death, oh, and they're about the size of a Shetland pony, but have a catlike build. Can run about as fast as a speederbike, and are extremely hard to spot. And a fucking care bear is using it's skull as a hat, and Ewoks canonically hunt the little fuckers. And don't even get me started on how a bunch of fucking midget wookies who haven't made it out of the stone age, can apparently just hop inside super advanced tech like AT TEs and speederbikes, and use them about as proficiently as trained humans, despite not being A. Tall enough, and B. Should be like a caveman opening up BLENDER and creating a perfect 3D model of the empire state building down to structural supports the first time he used it. And yet. Oh, and they eat other species, including humans. So, there's also that. I'm just saying, it's probably a good thing they all died when the debris from the death star inevitably hit the moon.

I loved this movie, its easily one of my favorites of this year. Does it have problems? Of course it does, especially in regards to the motivations (I get that the people of the future were deseperate, the end of all humanity was right around the corner, but was sending civilians to the future to bid time until the toxin was made really the right answer?), and the time travel (then again, the first two Terminator films have similar time travel issues when you look deep into it, but no one bats an eye because those films are considered classics and for good reason.). Aside from that, every other complaint I've heard about this film feel like needless nitpicks. Firing constantly without reloading? Come on, other movies have done that before! Chris Pratt's character fighting the female White Spike with his fists at the end of the film? He wasn't using his fists, he armed himself with that Spike claw Dorian gave him first, how come no one noticed this? The references and inspirations from other films? While The Thing/Alien references were a bit on-the-nose, again, other films have done this before, stop pinpointing it all on this movie. The White Spikes losing the 'impending doom' feeling once they come in in CGI swarms? I don't know about you, but I thought they still carried that feeling throughout the whole movie. In fact, the White Spikes (and the message about family and trauma) were easily the best parts of the film for me. Their designs were familiar yet unique (not to mention grotesque), they were overpowered, yes, but not to the point where they felt invincible, and I thought the way they swarmed was terrifying. I bought the idea that these things could wipe out all life on Earth, and that, like the Xenomorphs, if even one managed to survive and escape, we would be screwed. The hate for the film is really getting out-of-hand, and I don't think it deserves it. Even if it's problematic, I had a blast watching it. It was more intense, emotional, fun, and memorable then it had every right to be. I am curious on how a sequel would go, though I have no idea how they're going to make one after that ending.

One thing I loved about the film was how it used color in it's scenes. So many sci fi series have sets that are dark and gloomy and it's refreshing to see sunny skies, tropical forests, fire and explosions look like they really do. The colors convey feeling and when we hear "don't go into the red smoke," we associate red with danger. So when we hear about a White Spike with a "red belly," we immediately know something is wrong. Super fun movie to watch!

I think my favorite part of this movie was the clear communication the White Spikes had with each other. Creature designs and behaviors are my favorites in movies

I wanna say that there is some subtle messaging on PTSD and what it does to the people who come back. there's a lot of great moments where this comes through, with Dan's initial talk with his father. the mentions from Muri that he changed after he came back. and the whole scene where he warps back. The whole scene is bleak and muted. he sees all the signs saying "best day ever", it feels like it should be a celebration... but he's broken inside after coming back, the look on Dan's face when he sees his daughter young again sells it all.

Really enjoyed this movie when I watched it. It's the kind of movie I want to see more of these days. Inventive while still being a bit cliche, taking itself seriously enough to have a plot but not so seriously it won't allow there to be fun moments, and all in all just trying to be entertaining instead of trying too hard to have a message or be "art". Sure the global warming aspect was there, but it didn't feel as forced as most movies do with stuff like that, and it was more as a "this is the explanation for why", rather than being "the monsters are our punishment for it" sort of thing like a lot of movies would do. All in all, not a masterpiece, but the kind of dumb fun sci fi movie we've been getting less and less of in recent years. I'd watch it again over most movies that have come out lately.
