One really cool thing that you didn't mention - the rain in the finale isn't rain, it's lines of code. The Matrix is literally falling apart because of what Smith has done to it.

I remember in the behind the scenes for this scene hearing that that the Matrix code was made to look like rain. It never occurred to me that we were actually looking at code, not rain. Nice pull

For me the most emotional moment of the movie wasn't Trinity dying (which certainly was a hit to the gut), but her seeing the real sun for the first time. I can't quite articulate the feelings that that gave me, but it was absolutely a huge moment.

I have always loved how Smith is the Antithesis of Neo, who is the thesis, and them merging is the answer (synthesis). But it's so cool how Neo and Smith are both the Wild cards, who go against their purpose. Especially Smith, in how he is the actual key in creating the peace. Him becoming an all-powerful villain, really helped set up the conditions to end the war. Also, a few other fun things I noticed are that Neo is One, while Smith is the many. And Neo becomes less and less emotional and more stoic with each movie, while Smith keeps hamming it up and acting more and more human. Smith killed Neo, who was reborn, then Neo killed Smith, who was also reborn. Smith works with the machines at first, before becoming a threat to the matrix. Neo is a threat to the matrix, before working with the machines to remove the threat. Even their core ideology is the opposite (Faith vs Nihilism). A lot of Ying-Yang stuff going on between them. Basically, it's an amazing cinematic rivalry, with a great ending.

It's really fun to think of Smith's role in the bigger picture. Because he became such a huge mega-threat, Neo was able to use him to negotiate peace with the machines. So Smith largely became the reason why negotiations were even possible. But if we take one step back, Smith became the threat he became because Neo jumped inside of him. Neo being the One *also* set up the conditions for negotiating the peace, in more ways than one. But then we take another step back, and when remembering that Smith calls the Oracle "mom," the reason why Smith even exists in the first place is (assumedly?) because the Oracle created him or had a hand in it. So it's like she's been working behind the scenes the whole time, or at least trying to get the right variables together, and leaving the rest to the pieces to sort things out.

So my theory for how the characters that aren’t Neo seem to also power up between films is because they are constantly seeing Neo do the impossible, since what limits people in the matrix is more their minds and what they believe is possible to do, seeing someone constantly do the impossible subconsciously makes them go “maybe I am still limiting myself, I can punch harder, jump higher, it isn’t impossible” and thus Morpheus is able to better hold his own against an agent and trinity kicks people into solid walls

@Darth Biomech I think you gotta be disconnected from the matrix first, u gotta know the world isn’t real, kinda like becoming lucid in a dream before you can change stuff to your will. Also there were a bunch of kids doing magicy stuff when they visited the oracle, so you might be on to something

Maand geleden

Though I like this idea, perhaps things aren't so simple as _just_ belief. Because then you'd expect the inexperienced and the children to routinely "break" the matrix, because they would simply not be aware that what they've doing is _supposed_ to be impossible.

I really like the Architect as sort of an Honourable Villain who doesn't really do anything antagonistic. He sort of represents the inevitable struggles and challenges of life without any malice or antagonism. Also I really like the contradictions of Agent Smith. He hates humans, but that is a human emotion he is emulating. He becomes unhinged which is a human flaw being emulated by a program which should be above such human weakness. So I think he was right in his Matrix 1 monologue about how he was afraid the humans had rubbed off on him, sickened by the smell.

Maand geleden
Pēteris Krišjānis
Pēteris Krišjānis

I think Agent Smith hates Matrix, because Matrix exists because of humans. He sees it as prison, which he as agent cannot escape. Neo frees him...sorta. But turns out he still can't accept it and don't want to be either deleted or leave. I think it is because as Oracle explains all programs have purpose - and Smith purpose is chasing and destroying Neo - giving Neo purpose to fight. And Smith does not realize what Neo does - that while he still does what Architect wants, he actually makes a choice to save everyone and make peace. Against all odds, he chooses to fight for it. I think idea is that you can still follow your 'programming' and yet make a substantial choice and change world...for real.

Maand geleden
GrimAhren
GrimAhren

@Orange Taxi may I remind you both that in the animatrix there's a story depicting how the war between humans and machines started in the first place? Robots became sentient. One robot killed its master for being treated poorly, or whatever. Was sentenced to death and got disassembled. Humans were divided between thinking that robots had no rights equal to humans or that they did. Robots protested alongside humans who wanted them to have equal rights. Clearly these robots had emotions. The war happened later on, robots won. Instead of extinguishing the human race, they put them into the matrix to preserve their species. There are different types of robots in the world of The matrix movies. It's clear that some have emotions, and some don't. Some of the machines would be equal to humans, while others would be a lesser species, type of machine, in terms of emotional capability. Agent Smith is an example of an AI without emotions. It is programmed to do one thing, and that's prevent humans Awakening from The matrix. From the second movie onward, he starts demonstrating emotions. In fact, I would argue that in the first movie he starts demonstrating emotions by saying that he hates the matrix and wants to get out. He is a slave to the system he was created to work in.

You know, the only thing I never really liked about the second and third movies, and it is still true for me to this day, is the addition of wackiness in certain scenes. As an example, think of the neophyte versus all the Smiths in the second movie. Neo grabs one of them and throws him onto a group and knocks them down, and there is an actual sound effect added of a bowling ball knocking down pins. This is just a pet peeve of mine. The scene would have worked great without the sound effect. With it it becomes more childish. In the third movie, the maniacal laugh agent Smith does once he absorbs the oracle is a bit too cartoony. If they had subdued it a little bit, maybe have him just do an evil smirk or an evil chuckle instead of that long drawn out cackle it would have maintained the more serious tone of the first movie. Again, these are minor things that don't actually ruined the movies for me but just make my eyes roll.

Maand geleden
Alex Jackson +164
Alex Jackson

When it dawned on me that Neo and The Oracle represent choice and free will and Smith represents determinism, it kinda hit me that the Wachowski might be trying to show how they resolve their incompatibilities by choosing to accept choicelessness. Neo accepts he has no choice but to allow the inevitable. So long as he chooses to fight it, he can't win.

@Orange Taxi don't see that I am conveying the opinion of a bigot, certainly gave two sides of a argument in my last post and my ideas above certificate fit the themes of the movie, do the machines not have almost all of human kind imprisoned? Of course there are good and bad machines one would hope but where their allegiances lie would be expected to be very much leaning to securing the future of their own kind.

Maand geleden
Orange Taxi
Orange Taxi

@Peter D Now you're being a bigot. So what if they are machines? Humans are controlling and groomers as well. If there are good and bad humans, there are good and bad machines as well. Either way, if it's grooming or it's fate, both are immoral.

Maand geleden
Peter D
Peter D

@Orange Taxi they are machines, Artificial intelligence, do you think they care if it's grooming? It's a means to control their own ends. The matrix is all about control and I guess controlling the one is a very high priority. The flip side of this discussion is that it's not grooming at all, the oracle has seen the future, she knows it is inevitable, so they would still be together even if she said nothing.

Maand geleden
Orange Taxi
Orange Taxi

@Eric H. Ah so it isn't by choice and hard work. Morpheus or Trinity can't stop it even though they want to. ONLY the One? Great message. Unless you're born with the talent, you won't be able to do anything, even IF you "choose" to.

@Orange Taxi Smith was not "the only was went against who he was and his programming." The Oracle said in Reloaded that programs who were deleted had to go back to the Source, but many chose to hide in the Matrix; it was why the Trainman exists, and the very beginning of this film shows programs choosing to go against their programming. They're all making choices, but it is Neo -- the One -- who can make the choice to stop fighting, because that is something Smith just will not, CANNOT do.

My favorite thing about the finale is that despite having the eyes of the oracle, the only part of his final confrontation with Neo that he can foresee is the moment of him standing over Neo and Neo’s surrender. As the Oracle always says, “we can’t see past choices we don’t understand.” Smith’s hubris and endless drive make it so that the only thing he can understand is the idea of him beating Neo. The actual concept of Neo choosing to fight and the consequences of his later surrender are lost on Smith because he fails to understand the most basic foundation of human life: living. That’s why the program who always complains about humans ends up crying that, “It’s not fair”, at the end. He understands the choices he wants to be made, but fails to grasp their meaning.

5:21 another weird fun fact about that in actual Greek mythology Hades treated Persephone immensely well by Greek standards at least. Persephone even enjoyed her time in the underworld falling genuinely in love with Hades and the legend of Persephone when you hear about it makes it seem like Hades is the bad guy but when you read the actual story it points the finger at Zeus who is the one who orchestrated the kidnapping in the legend. Persephone became a queen of Queens by hades's own words, ruler of all since everything must die and has just as much power and authority as her husband Hades which was extremely rare in the world in fact in some cases she was feared more than Hades.

Rewatching the series over quarantine really made me appreciate, not exactly how well-thought out the series was, but how well the sequels built upon everything that was baked in or implied in The Matrix. Smith's last speech to Morpheus about how he cannot STAND the Matrix and having to be in contact with humanity is almost driving him insane with rage, becomes a brilliant set up for both his later motivation to subsume the Matrix as a living virus, and all the very human programs we see in Reloaded and Revolutions in particular.

So I remember liking Revolutions after my initial watch. I also remember being confused. It wasn't till Path Of Neo. At the Neodamarung section of the game, the residual self images of the Wachowskis actually explaining the end of the 3rd film(before admitting that would be lame for a video game). After that I understood the ending much more. I always found it fascinating the ratios of Matrix Vs The Real World. There is roughly the same amount of Real World time in the first film as the Matrix time in Revolutions. I think the later films are definitely over hated (especially when you consider expectations vs reality, ik so much Vs in this comment). Other than that I am so stoked to see where things go from here

I've always felt the trilogy was leading up to the Matrix 'waking up.' its clear (to me at least) that Zion couldn't support 10 billion humans, to say nothing of people who couldn't really adjust to life outside the matrix, and of course the Machine City is ruled by the architect or something like him, so the programs need somewhere to run. so the outcome of revolutions opens the door to the matrix beginning to achieve some sort of self-determination as an 'in-between' faction, both human AND program.

@Zacharie Guillerey literally everything can be summed up that way. the whole of every religion can be summed up as, listen to me, cause this thing I said exists but never proved it said so. oh, and gimme all your money. I guess that means its all sorted then, and you can shut down all theological studies.

Maand geleden
Zacharie Guillerey

@zombiexslayer614 I did look it up. I also did have several friends following studies in "letters college" (litterature + philosophy in France). And most of the movies philosophy revolves around 3 main axis : self vs many, real vs imagined (knowing the only certain truth is "cogito ergo sum" meaning the imagined may be more real than what we consider it to be, basically comes down to do you consider others to be real (Neo) or part of your imagination and therefore not important (Sipher - Smith for instance) and as stated in the video choice vs determinism. This is pretty good level for a movie don't take me wrong, but the simple fact I could sum it up in a few words in a language that isn't even my own gives you an idea that it is not worth several years of studies (which basically a college IS). More complex thinkers like Kant, Marx, Nietsche, Diderot or Bergson's theories are not even approached. This could be good for a first year introduction course, not much more. Hence the "low bar" comment.

My favorite line in all of these films is Morpheus saying, “Do you think that’s air you’re breathing?” So well stated and basically explains the trilogy to me. An interesting take someone had, I can't recall who, talked about how as the trilogy goes on Neo becomes more and more machinelike. Meanwhile his inverse, Smith, becomes more and more human, culminating in his rage in the final fight. He suffers from emotions that cloud his machinelike precision, while Neo becomes the more precise and unflinching of the two, going quietly to his apparent death.

Well, Laurence's Morpheus died in the Matrix Online so I can see why they've changed the actor. 'Revolutions' is my favorite of the three films, not just because of the awesome action scenes, but because of the huge philosophical ramifications of its ending: I don't see the trilogy about being fate vs choice, but about achieving harmony. For centuries, humanity has sought complete freedom, and the machines have sought complete control. The problem is, humans and machines need each other, and thus, neither can get what they want. But with the truce, both sides now have a chance to create a harmonious relationship that benefits both sides: humanity has the choice of staying in the Matrix or going into the real world without fear of being killed by robot squid, while the machines get the power they want from people who choose to stay and no longer have to devote so many resources to fighting an unwinnable war. It's a win-win for everyone!... assuming the fourth movie undoes it all, which I REALLY hope doesn't happen.

One neat thing about the Train Man is that he had a small cameo in Enter the Matrix. Before Niobe had a chance to return to the real world, he showed up and said, "72 hours. That's how long you lasted last time," most likely referring to the previous time Zion had been destroyed.

Your Reloaded video gave me the urge to rewatch the series last weekend and it's still as enthralling as the first time. I noticed so many new things I missed on previous viewings, there is just so much packed into every movie. Love or hate the sequels they sure stuffed them full of tiny details for the fans to enjoy. And they sure deliver on the spectacle that the first movie promised with it's premise. Ressurections is, as Smith would say, Inevitable given that both Neo and Trinity's bodies were left laying about in Machine City at the end of Revolutions. Can't be hard for the machines to either refurbish or recycle the bodies with the same DNA and, given they once existed as code inside their systems, wouldn't be that hard to load a backup version of themselves into those bodies again if it ever became necessary. Just bugs me that until Resurrections, just like Bourne until Legacy, the series auto-alphabatized itself. My OCD will hate seeing the movies out of order whenever they're shown together.

Years later, with my expectations being different, I enjoyed them a lot more. R & R still aren't as good as The Matrix, but they're good in their own right. Like, The Matrix was a 10 out of 10. I think i expected you to have a different reaction to neos "because i choose to" for me it is the highlight of the 3 movies and the answer to all the questions. The difference between humans and machines, is choice. Free will. And whether or not he literally had free will (i.e. everything is predetermined) i feel that didnt matter because it still shows the difference between humans and machines. Drive vs Will. As smith puts it, purpose. He is a machine he believes in purpose. Neo was his opposite. Neo had agency in that world and its why smith was unable to "see past" his decisions if you will. Tldr, neos final line, very inspiring and just a perfect ending to his character. The culmination of what it means to be the one.
