Dude, that point you made about how the villain says "we're scared of you!" despite clearly not being scared, that was actually kinda mind blowing to me. I know the director didn't fully intend Luca to be an allegory for anything, but that definately added some fuel to a lot of those theories or analysyis' for me.

@ThirrinDiamond you just took it way too seriously, they were just relating a couple of sea monsters to another kind of sea monster as a joke,,, just think for a second if what you’re getting offended over is really that bad because honestly I don’t think the commenter had some deep underlying meaning about trying to villainize minorities. @NriShiee aka the comment you responded to was talking about homophobia and said sea monsters as in referring to the movie. You (whether through decision or not) misinterpreted that as to meaning the pop culture term of sea monsters and thus comparing homosexual people and the imagined "threat" they are to a literal skyscraper height squid. That's extremely tonedeaf and insensitive (and i say this as a person with diagnosed autism, aka a disability that makes me prone to making social blunders which makes me wonder if yours was intended to change the conversation into a negative direction) and makes it seem as if you were doing it maliciously in order to imply you find homosexual people that dangerous. (Which plenty of people claim they do whilst trying to strip them of basic human rights, like living, aka what the original comments were talking about and what the movie talks about) Minorities are not dangerous, not more than the majority and certainly not because of the thing that makes them a minority. I hope you can learn from this that your words impact. Everything is not necessarily ok to say in every context

3:59 One thing I noticed was when Alberto says his greeting and does his hand shake, Luca asks him what does it mean but Alberto glosses it over. Throughout the movie, Alberto doesn’t want to admit it when he misunderstands or doesn’t know about something. But at the end of the movie, (16:49) He says his greeting and does his handshake, Luca asks him again what does it mean, but this time responds with “No idea, go find out for me will ya?” He’s no longer afraid to admit that he doesn’t know what it means and accepts admitting it.

One of the most heartbreaking scenes from this movie is Luca’s betrayal of Alberto. When Alberto left, he didn’t even try to dodge the harpoons being thrown at him. It’s almost like he didn’t care if they hit him. And when Luca found him, he didn’t lash out at Luca. He really felt that he was the cause. That’s what made the ending so much better. When they had to part, he assured Luca that he was okay because he hadn’t been while living on that island. He was alone.

Look I am going to saythis because Alberto is an animated character and he will not hear this. That moment was totally his fault. You just dont reveal you friends' secrets without their permission. Like this is BFFs rule one. I get that he was a victim of child abuse and thats why he should be showered with love and doted upon but in my head objectively (since luca did not know about the abuse) he was completely justified in his reaction.

A few more details: the wild vespas moving a little like dolphins, again, probably the closest thing to a vespa he's seen until now, given that they're a size a sea monster could ride, Luca becoming so good at bicycle riding so quickly because he's spent his life underwater, which is denser than air giving him stronger leg muscles than a human, The slight Aardman look to the art style (Pixaardman) Also, if Luca's Grandmother has been regularly sneaking up to the surface, does that mean she's friends with the two old ladies? I feel a little like there could be another story with the three of them where they chose to live on the surface and she didn't, but that their friendship has continued for decades like this

When ercole throws the harpoons at Alberto he doesn’t try to dodge - whether you interpret that as a small suicide attempt or him just being that distraught after Lucas betrayal He also has a small slice scar on his arm we can see when in human form - given his history with fishermen and harpoons it’s safe to guess that might be a scar from a harpoon that nicked him

I like a lot of others like to view this movie through an lgbt lens. Even if it wasn’t intentional it’s still there and that makes the movie even more powerful to me. I mean… Alberto literally outs himself, tries to out Luca and then Luca keeps his true self concealed to avoid the negative outcome. It’s a similar reading you can give to the little mermaid both the Disney version and the original Hans Christian Andersen story.

I really would not be surprised if Luca and Alberto had that awkward first teenage kiss in a sequel (really it would be a huge win for Pixar if they did), but at the same time if they had it that they were just two close friends who never shied away from expressing their platonic love for one another and normalised hugging and displays of emotion between two young male adults I'd also be happy, to help normalise that however you choose to display your friendship with those closest to you is perfectly acceptable.

Maand geleden

I think it was intentional… I don’t know how you could watch it without thinking for a moment “are they gay?” To me the allegory is incredibly obvious, especially if you consider what Luca’s grandmother said at the end(“not everyone will accept him, but some people will, and he knows how to find the good ones”), as well as how both boys turned into sea monsters in the ending scene as if they’re “exposing who they really are”

I mean, if I remember correctly the directors said that they deliberately wrote the movie in such a way that you either could see it as LGBTQ+ themed, or just as some kids becoming friends and going to explore a whole new world. After two viewings, Luca became my favorite Pixar movie (I’ve now seen it over 20 times). The way the characters were written and portrayed as well as the themes and messages really spoke to me. For example, Giulia’s family situation (split family and feeling like an outsider in a different city when going to visit your other parent) and how it was treated by not making it a big deal like it is in so many pieces of media. This is something I’ve basically been dealing with for my entire life and it felt nice to have it be recognized that not all families are perfect but that just because they’re not doesn’t mean they can’t work. Luca’s curiosity and drive to learn more about the world around him also really resonated with me. And I see him in the end going to stay in the human world while balancing and accepting his differences as a loose metaphor for immigration. My mom and dad are German immigrants to the U.S and my step mom is a Colombian immigrant and they all still have lots of family in their respective countries. While I’m in the U.S and have to figure how to balance my cultural heritage and family with the ideas and culture of where I live. I was also kind of the outsider/weird kid in school too and the trio friendship setup is almost the same with the friends I had in grade school (and still friends to this day) so it was nice to remember that. The movie’s way of portraying acceptance and talking about it also helped me to do some introspection of myself and helped me to acknowledge and accept the fact that I’m asexual. Luca may be a simple movie plot wise but the profound way it has affected me and the time it’s come at the end of a major cycle of personal growth (graduating high school, starting college, reconnecting with my mom’s side of the family and restoring a line of communication that had been broken for almost 15 years, losing several friends and family members, surviving a pandemic) has solidified it as one of my favorite movies of all time.

Surprised that the whole, "This is how I came into the world," moment wasn't counted as a win. Setting up the guy's missing arm, having him fake us out by saying sea monsters ate it, and then having him casually shrugging off the fact that he was born with only one arm, since it's normal for him, and then it's never brought up again, like it's not a big deal, because it's actually not. That moment stuck with me.

I’m going to say right now that Pixar has never really manage to make me cry. It has made me feel very sentimental and sad but not enough for me to cry. Luca, however, was a completely different story. It was the very first Pixar movie I cried to. I guess it kinda hits home for me because I just recently moved and left behind family, friends, especially my best friend. The ending really struck me. It was both beautiful and sad. It’s even more sad when you realize that Alberto practically lost everything. He lost his father, he lost his family, he was lonely and he probably lost his dignity too when Luca betrayed him. However, at the end, Alberto’s final decision to let Luca go was a character development, as he didn’t want to harbor Luca anymore. He knew that although he had the Vespa he always dreamed of, Luca’s happiness was where his heart was. If his friend was happy, then so was he. Simple but very powerful to say the least. Can’t wait to see more of Alberto with the upcoming short film. CinemaWins you’re one awesome YouTuber. Thanks for the video!! ❤️

7:07 The subtle movements in this film amaze me every time. When the alarm clock goes off and other times he's scared, Luca's pupils constrict. They even got down Alberto's mannerisms to contrast with Luca's politeness, you can constantly see him picking at his nose and ears. The realistic skin detail impressed me too. Luca's got the pale skin and reddened features with freckles, so he's barely seen the sun. Alberto's very tan, showing he's spent a lot more time on the surface. And the color of their scales and how they shimmer in sea monster form is identical to similar-colored fish.

Man this movie hits me so hard. I'm queer, and bro, all the allegories there are for queer community always make me cry. When Alberto feels like he's losing the one person (?) in his life that has made him feel life is so much more and then having this fight with Luca, Luca outs Alberto just to keep himself safe, people coming after them just because they're different, people who's also "different" being the only ones that stand up for them, like Massimo. I have not lived in an environment in which homophobia is as strong but the fear is there. Fear of knowing someone may come to extreme means just to get you because you are different, like trans people being murdered because they're trans. This movie always hits me in a way I cannot understand why it hits, but it does. And dude, I love it with my whole soul.

I'm so glad you addressed the LGBTQIA+ allegory in the movie. I was worried you weren't but it makes me really glad to see people even outside of the community recognising it and acknowledging it. Even if it wasn't what the writers intended, so many people related to the movie in that way and personally it got me through some tough times. Besides all of that, Luca is a beautiful movie that should be appreciated by everyone! And the same goes for the ocean! :) #TeamSeas

A really fun attention to detail thing I noticed was that Alberto's cheeks, nose, and shoulders are sunburned, like he's actually been living on land a lot longer than he's been living underwater. And there are even little patches of freckles in the same areas, which only further emphasize the point.

“Historians were perplexed by their close relationship, neither married, but lived together for 60 years solely for companionship…” This movie can be interpreted by many ways, either for the rainbow community, Special community, community with disabilities or just random kid who feels differently. This is why I love Luca, anyone can see themselves as Luca.

@0nline? That’s not exactly what I’m trying to point out. Here, this video will probably explain it better: https://youtu.be/zHw7gdV7xF8 People who are not queer can relate to this too, obviously. It’s not exclusive to queer people. I’m just saying it has themes that can easily resonate with queer people.

Maand geleden
0nline?
0nline?

@NeverTrustADuck a lot of people who are not queer can relate to this. It has nothing to do with being queer and assuming that anyone who has hard struggles and is different is queer is stereotypical

Maand geleden
NeverTrustADuck +2
NeverTrustADuck

@0nline? I thought the allegory was very strong. Even most straight people I know who saw the movie instantly recognized that it was very similar to the queer experience. Maybe you just don’t know a lot about queer people?

@0nline? This person is saying that you can interpret the movie any way you want—it doesn’t matter what the creator’s intentions were. Anyway, he said he understood why people saw it as an allegory for queerness.

Just in case anyone was curious, Luca’s last name is Paguro and Alberto’s last name is Scorfano. Paguro is the Italian word for Hermit Crab and Scorfano is a type of ugly red fish that is really tasty once you cook it. I took this to mean that Luca has grown a bigger shell through the course of the movie and Alberto has shed his ugly exterior for the sweet friendly insides (:

9:28 I'm Italian and I too watched it in the "Italian version" (both with the English dub and Italian dub) and I didn't know there were differences, but it seems like in the "English version" they've either removed some of the writings or added more visual cues. Like adding the cup and the little pen and paper logo in the Portorosso Cup banner or the schematic representation of the Solar system on the cover of the book about the universe...maybe they thought the other writings they removed would have been distracting in those particular shots?

Thank you for at least acknowledging the LGBTQ+ allusion. It meant a lot to me when I saw the movie for the first time. Then I saw not a lot of people caught the whole vibe I felt when watching it. But knowing it’s being talked about on a CinemaWins video is all that matters to me. Like the undertone isn’t going unnoticed. I definitely felt a Call Me By Your Name thing going on even if it wasn’t intentional. The feeling is there and it doesn’t go away no matter how many times I watch Luca. I actually always saw the Vespa as something we all want, especially as a child, freedom. We all want and wish to be in a world where we can do whatever we want but the reality is we can’t venture off into this perfect world. Sometimes we have to face it and others. Luca and Alberto ultimately had to go their separate ways, they had to tell the whole town who they really are (which could come as risks later if someone chooses not to accept them), in school you can’t do whatever you want and even Alberto can’t. But they still felt free because they followed their heart, a lesson I wish I had when I was younger

I'm gonna say it here, I love how they introduced the dad to look intimidating and comes out to be super supportive, loving his daughter and basically adopting Alberto, it also shows us more disability with him having one arm and saying "It's how I came into the world". I also love that there's another movie with both parents alive and very active in the movie instead of just showing up for 2 minutes of the moving then being left in the background for the rest.
