Lynch’s Dune has such a unique flavor all its own. It’s clumsily-told, to be sure, but so beautiful to take in. Also it has a pug in it. Jodorowsky’s Dune makes for a great watch if you want to experience something REALLY different.

I love the 1984 film, it's my favourite film - I don't even think of it as exactly a David Lynch film. It's like some weird accident that he was involved with with alot of people. If you watch interviews with everyone else who worked on it though, they all are very proud of it. The only real downside for that film for me is that it doesn't emphasise much at all that Paul's existence (for everyone else) is not such an unambiguously great thing overall - in fact it's kind of buried. It's a shame as they had deleted scenes which would have made this very clear. It's one thing that the new film got right with the scene when Paul has a vision when he and Jessica are in the tent in the desert.

@Carey Law you clearly didn’t understand the motivations of the factions if that’s what you took from the movie. Atreides are an honourable house, and have a strong level of respect amongst the other houses. The emperor is jealous, and dislikes one of the great houses having that much power. He reassigns the Haarkonen and “gifts” Arakkis to the Atreides, opening them to the possibility of a war with the Haarkonen. This way the emperor can eliminate the Atreides and secure his seat on the throne without lifting a finger. The Fremen simply want Arakkis to themselves, and view anyone assigned there by the emperor as an outsider and invader. There’s no real motivation for them beyond protecting their native homeland, while they wait for their biblical chosen one to show up and bring them to paradise. I hope this helps

@NovusIgnis I actually screenshot your explanation so I can assist new viewer to understandt the movie..I am a hardcore Dune fan and watched and read all the books ..the real reason many viewer can't understand the movie is that many weird new name and words are used that even until this day I still can't even say The Kiwswand Hadirant properly ..I had spent more time trying to remember so many weird names of the chatrectare to even having time to understand the plot it self.. 🤣 lmao

@NovusIgnis you said correctly..Dune is a movie for a mind of 21 and older ..most casual movies goer are like Star Wars fans of minimum of 13 years old ..most casual movie goer now and day likes movie like Iron man and MCU ..explosive and fighting like Dragon ball z..it isnt their fault they see so much their mind depends on it ..Dune is more of a thinking movie and conceptualizing the meaning of certain scene..young viewer are not able to thinking deep yet so only see explosive and straight kiss as it is ..

I love the Lynch film as much as I love Kubricks The Shining. Both great films. Both dreadfully terrible adaptations that betray the very point of the source materials... where as LoTR does detours, but is so overwhelming faithful and in love with the source, the detours reflect the greater point.

I'll never understand why some people complain about the changes in Jackson's LoTR, and I say that as someone who's favourite book is the Silmarilion. I love what you had to say here. You make a lot of good points. I'm a firm believer in the right to enjoy movies and books even when they are not "good." I had fun with this version of Dune, but my first introduction was my mom asking me to tape the mini series for her and not being able to turn away from the screen. I asked my mom if I could borrow the book from the library and she smiled and said "top shelf, sweetie." We had our own copy, still in my posession 21 years later despite how hard I am on books. It was late but I read the whole thing that night and was instantly obsessed. I've read it cover to cover over 30 times, and go back to favorite passages often. My English teacher loaned me her copies of Dune Messiah and Children of Dune, and I blasted straight through those two and onto the library to get the last three. I love the whole series, especially the improvements in the characterization of women in the last two books. Some of what was written of women in the first book had me like "shit, this is tens of thousands of years in the future, and yet so obviously 1960s."

Since you mentioned about the importance of reading and knowing source material in your video, may I suggest doing a Cinema Wins video on Steven Spielberg's "Adventures of Tintin: the Secret of the Unicorn", as an example of adapting a story to the movie medium correctly. The Adventures of Tintin comic series has a massive cultural influence in Europe (unfortunately not in USA) so I'm sure many European viewers would love your take on the movie. It is an absolutely great adaptation with great cast (Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and etc.), great music by John Williams, great everything and is super fun, even to a viewer who never heard of Tintin before. I think it's a masterpiece and would love to see you do a video about it. On a side note, it would be cool if you did a video on one of the old Jackie Chan movies (Iike Project A for example), since his Hong Kong action movies are really fun and easy to watch.

@CantankerousDave Oooh, having a Cinema Wins video on "Asterix and Obelix" will be great to see (especially the first one), but I've never read the comics, so I'd prefer Tintin, since it holds a special place in my heart. Also, reflexively using British English isn't a downside ;)

I'd also love to see him cover more hand-drawn animated films, with one I highly recommend is actually 3 of them known collectively as Cartoon Saloon's Irish Folklore Trilogy, the films in question are 2009's The Secret of Kells, 2014's Song of the Sea, and 2020's Wolfwalkers. While all 3 have similar elements (child protagonist with a female companion that's more mythical, a stern yet protective father figure, Irish myths being real, etc) the stories themselves are unique and worth watching

There will always be Lynch fanbois who fawn over it and say how great it is, even though Lynch himself doesn't want to discuss it and is embarrassed by it. Did it have some similarities to the book? The shields DO come up again in the movie. You show the scene Duncan Idaho uses a shield while fighting the Sadaukar before taking a lucky/precise shot to the head. Shields are important in the backstory to explain why people use low-tech and melee weapons. When everyone has Shields to protect against "normal" weapons and the effect Lasguns have on shields(nuclear explosion) melee weapons are the most effective weapon. You should see Mr Welch's video on the Dune roleplaying game and the Atreides Battle Pug.

I saw it last week in a regular theater (not IMAX) and had issues with some of the dialogue being muddled or buried under the score at times. It wasn’t that the music was too loud, but seemed more of an audio mixing issue. Had the same experience with Tenet, which was also scored by Zimmer. Had to watch Tenet and the new Dune again at home with captions on to get the full dialogue.

@fendelphi In either case the movie imo is trying way too hard with too simple of a script, and the music is too often too loud. trying to act like it is more than what it is. Not that grand of a story really, at least not relative to modern storytelling.

@fendelphi I wish I could rewatch the movie right now, cause I feel like this isn't true. I'm sure the moments you mention *are* marked as you describe, but as far as I can recall I did feel it was excessively loud at moments that did not necessarily have thematic importance too. I will admit I do not know the overarching plot of the story, so I can not tell with certainty which moments are truly important and which ones are not, but it did seem loud in moments I could not imagine were all that important.

Nice to finally see some appreciation to an otherwise imperfect film. I still think 3 films should be the minimum to cover the first Dune book but no studio would dare take that risk. While a bit off-topic, I like how Westwood Studios straight up lifted the aesthetics of the David Lynch movie into Dune 2000 and Emperor: Battle for Dune instead of coming up with something different like they did in Dune II. If it weren't for that, I probably wouldn't have watched the 1984 film!

I absolutely love this movie. In no small part, because it was my introduction to David Lynch. And I've never been the same. (In a good way.)

To anyone wanting to watch the new Dune : It is amazing, in almost every way. But it is a little tricky to follow. I found myself confused about multiple things and I think that might throw some people off. Regardless, my current favourite movie and I can't wait for the next one, I love the universe of it and it's definitely up there with Lord of the Rings in terms of world building and overall quality.

Mad Gordon Cole vibes on that cameo. I should add. It's heartwarming how much Lynch stuff made it into the new version. It's better in every way, but he still treated this one with love.

I'm not going to tone down my love for this movie with a "despite its flaws", it's a dark mirror to Star Wars in a superbly real feeling universe.

I always enjoy watching this Dune. I see it's flaws and love it anyway. Must admit I've not seen the mini series tho and think I need to rectify that. Really looking forward to seeing the new Dune as well.

As amazing as this film is and i love every second and the score. I recently came upon a thought. If that is the hardest stone on Dune, and that cutter didnt even make a scratch on it, just how and what did they use to cut the hardest stone from the hardest stone then proceed to cut the hardest stone into a pyramid shape. Lol.

Hey cinema wins! I absolutely love your channel! So fun to watch you analyse and review films with the small but interesting points and a win counter. I have a question though, do you plan to do a everything great about Doctor who any time soon? Doctor who is my favourite series on TV. I arguably like it more than the marvel stuff IMO as I grew up with it in my childhood, marvel came around during my Teenage years. More to the point I’d love to here your thoughts on Doctor who (the modern era, or classic depending on your preference.) but yeah I love your vids! Would be fun to see an everything great about Doctor who!

8:57 is important because later on Lynch totally displeased with the studio and the production refused to even rerelease an edited version the larger originally film after release of the shorter original. He hated his role in the film forever, sadly.

Great to watch this back to back with Movie Sins, and end on a positive note! I love the weirdness, despite the at times terrible acting, (or because of it). The world would be a less colourful place without this movie (and it looks like the new one is literally the opposite in terms of palettes). So vive la difference! And there's a space pug, which I only noticed after watching this video, which goes into battle with Patrick Stewart. The new movie will never top that!

Personally I always watch the version on YouTube where its extended to add in a bunch of deleted scenes as well as some new scenes that give even more exposition (mostly background info at the start of the movie which better explains all the different groups). Bonus being its free to watch.

Thanks for doing this video! As lifelong fans of the books and Lynch film since the '80s, both my wife and I were utterly bored by the new film. I am thrilled it has so many fans, but I feel it embodies everything about modern film making that has kept me from the theaters for a decade. It was not a film made for me.

I really like the new film, but it's so po-faced compared to the 80s film - I've had a few friends say they thought it was just boring. The 80s film is still the best - the people in it are from a genuinely different time,

Since they covered this much of the story already I would have liked to see the new one be a continuation of the story, like Blade Runner 2049 - not just a remake intended to bury Lynch's effort.

I'm so sorry people didn't like this film. I loved it. But then, I watched it before I read the book so that might explain it. Also, I don't understand how people didn't understand what was going on. I thought it was perfectly clear.
