Godzilla 2! Or is it Godzilla 2, Kong 3? To be honest I totally forget this was also a sequel to Skull Island...sooooo that's still on the list. Makes sense more now with the Godzilla vs. Kong Trailer out. King of the Monsters did better with audiences than critics so it's a perfect reason to find everything right with Godzilla!

Honestly…. I saw a lot of human drama and the monster fights were so so. Some great stuff in the latter but also they kinda missed in others too (cutting away once a fight starts a few times for example) With the many Godzilla films we had balancing drama and action, I’m pretty sure the appropriate response to critics is saying: “Why not have both?”

Problem is critics don't look at this from the perspective of a Godzilla fan. Or even from the perspective of someone who just likes a fun movie. As a Godzilla fan this film was great. Sure I have minor nitpicks in a few places. But I could tell this was made by people who appreciated and respected the source material. Which is about all I ask from a US Godzilla film. Which I felt this film went above and beyond that with it all. Just so many perfect moments for me as a fan. Especially due to the music. I got teary eyed just hearing a lot of it. Watching this made me appreciate some moments a bit more. Like I never caught that you can see the pattern of Mothra wings in Godzilla Nuclear pulse. Even the ending was perfect as someone who loved System of the Down growing up.

@Fermion bro, you, the frickin main sentence of what you just said is what I really like, don't hate a movie because someone else hate it or rather worse reading someone elses opinion to cloud your own opinion. That is really important, don't make a random detail from 1:28:03 that was slightly incorrect make you dislike a movie or regarded it as a bad movie, it should be your own opinion from your heart and not a poopy critic from some random comments.

Huge G-fan here (King Kong vs Godzilla was the first live-action film I ever watched when I was 3). I was hurt when I saw the review embargo drop & this film quickly get mostly negative reviews. I went to the theater a little down but hoping for the best since I loved G14 & waited 5 damn years for this movie. I hated it when it was done, which was only compounded with the end-credits scene (copying Marvel will neither get you more favorable reviews nor equivalent box-office totals). Almost everything I love about G14 was gone & this film itself was so all-over-the-place. After many re-watches, I've grown to tolerate & enjoy this film. I still hate a lot of little things here & there, but enjoy it as a big kaiju celebration that mostly honors the strange & evolving legacy of Big G.

The sequence of Mothra coming out of the waterfall is THE master clip of the Monsterverse. Everything else could be subject to criticism. Not that. Bear McCreary’s updated score, the visuals, the pacing. It’s perfection.

This isn’t a critics need to understand moment, this is a misunderstanding, of course no one cares about the characters in John wick because they’re not the appeal, the appeal is the action which is made satisfying by the context, without that context there’s no reason to be engaged, Godzilla lacks this necessary context which is why they have to have 10 different characters constantly spout exposition of context we’ve never seen, and that makes the build up to the fights slow and monotonous and the fights themselves lacklustre and non engaging

I adore Mothra and my first OG Godzilla movie was the one with Ghirdorah, so this made my little fangirl heart happy. My mom and I had been speculating for MONTHS about what or who was going to be in it, and how they would tie in various references. Honestly, I feel this remakes have been wonderful homages to the source material, regardless of what critics say. Someone already mentioned but all repeat, the critics aren't thinking from a Godzilla fans' perspective, which is probably why it's "so low". And that's fine, I'm all for just a fun movie with kaiju any day, regardless of what someone else says about it. And this one was FUN!

That’s a straw man. The problem was that the movie had heavy focus on human drama, which as you can see by every other top comment, nobody cares about. The Avengers movies are also big dumb CGI fight movies, but they are heavily praised because they have big dumb action AND compelling stories/characters. A movie can do both, and it should. When a movie like KOTM has 10% entertaining action and 90% boring at best human drama, yeah, it could be better.

What confuses me about critics liking 2014 more is that KOTM from a character perspective technically had better characters in terms of actually showing development. 2014 has the vast advantage in acting due to an amazing opening performance by Bryan Cranston, and having a generally more serious tone all around, but none of the characters actually did much or experienced much in the way of character development. They didn’t change or learn much to anything from their experiences, and besides Serizawa, they didn’t even have much in terms of static character arcs either. Meanwhile Mark in this movie actually has meaningful development in this movie that gives this movie meaning. He starts with a massive amount of trauma and baggage from Godzilla’s initial rampage, seeing Godzilla as nothing more than a threat, a waiting enemy to be feared. But as the movie progresses, he begins to see Godzilla more and more like he views his animals, learning from talks with Serizawa and Dr. Chen, and actually observing Godzilla, that Godzilla is not explicitly an evil menace. He’s the apex of nature, neither entirely a friend, nor explicitly an enemy of humans. He is an entity to be respected, treated with care, but not to be viewed with complete fear or disdain. As a side note, I love the analogy of Dr.Chen in this movie when she compares western and eastern mythology around dragons. The idea that western mythology often viewed dragons as monsters to be slain and conquered, whereas the east revered them as special spiritual beings, kinda feels like a commentary on the overall perception of godzilla across different audiences across the globe. And it even brings into question the perhaps hubris of many of the hero-centric man vs nature tales that spread in western stories over the centuries. This being a very on the nose environmental movie, it makes me think there was an intention to link such stories to the disregard of nature by many modern civilizations, who like with the analogy of the dragons, saw nature to be conquered rather than revered.

Great video. Here is an additional win: During the final battle, as Mark just entered Boston to find Maddison, we stop and the camera makes a circle around Mark, showing Godzilla and Ghidorah fighting right behind him and all the chaos that ensues around him. That little scene is not only an example of this movie's absolutely stellar cinematography, but it also helps us get into Mark's shoes and understand the confusion and agony he is feeling as he tries to find his daughter.

A lot of people like to crap on this movie, and while it was a basic-ish plot, Michael Douerty, Bear McCreary, and the whole entire team put a lot of love into this movie. Never, would I have imagined Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah to be in an American Godzilla movie, but they did this right. This movie was beautiful. Just like the queen of the monsters

@adam Battra isn't exactly related to Mothra, though they share the same origin. There is a male Mothra, though, Mothra Leo, who'd be interesting to try to incorporate into the Monsterverse canon. His Aqua Form and Lightspeed Form would be especially hard to render in realistic CGI with a straight face. Battra is *long* overdue for a return to cinema, though. I hope we see him soon.

One of the greatest things I love about this movie is that, instead of adding things that the producers might think will be better, they just took what they already had (from the original movies) like soundtrack and names and remake it. They didn't need to be original and add new "cooler" things because they understood that what the audience wanted was the old Godzilla fighting. Critics might think that a movie with such "unoriginality" might not be what people want but, as a fan, coming to a movie where all my favorite parts have been respected (not everything but nothing's perfect), feels good.

A living thunderstorm just duked it out with a living tsunami before our very eyes to simply to prove who the alpha is. You think nature is too noble to wage war? It just did! You aren’t elevating war! You’re forcing it to evolve beyond humanity and into the hands of the Titans!”

I love how critics say that this is a no watch because it's just a monster fighting movie but that's the point of sending the iconic Godzilla against even one equally iconic monster from the same universe like mothra or Ghidorah it's not meant to be anything more than a brawl between the most badass and iconic giant radioactive mutant lizard and some of the most equally badass and iconic monsters from the same universe that's lIke saying that power rangers is a no watch because it's just a bunch of teenagers fighting monsters it's literally the premise of such a title if you are looking for a movie that has Godzilla fighting other kiaju but actually wish that the titular monsters are given a complete backseat and humans take center stage the whole time then you don't understand the thing about Godzilla movies even though I never seen one I know that the main focus of the movie is on the big boy himself and humans are just side characters that try to survive the chaos while also trying to kill Godzilla each character gets their moments in the spotlight we see plenty of Godzilla but we cut to humans watching him to ensure he doesn't cause too much damage and so they can send him on his way when he's finished at times when it's necessary to see the perspective the humans have to Godzilla he's just fighting monsters that he absolutely hates and nothing more to the humans they are trying to save their world from monsters by having Godzilla kill them and preparing for the worst possible outcome which would be Godzilla going nuts even after killing his monster foes but it's entirely focusing on Godzilla and his epic fights as intended with the franchise
